In 2002, I cofounded 34 Million Friends of the United Nations Population Fund because the Bush Administration withheld $34 million from the United Nations Population Fund which works worldwide for women's reproductive health and family planning. The idea was to ask 34 million Americans for one dollar. We've raised a lovely $4.2 million and counting. This movement is alive and well. I've written a nice book "34 Million Friends of the Women of the World" which chronicles the rather amazing adventure of 34 Million Friends. Jane Roberts and Her 34 Million Friends is Chapter 8 in the Kristof-Wudunn book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. I was also one of the 1000 women nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 as part of 1000 Peace Women. I speak widely to spread the word about women's education, health and human rights being key to any hope for people, the planet and peace.
