AMWIK

About Me:

Established in 1983, the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) is a national independent, non profit, membership organisation for media women from the print, electronic media and communications sector. It was founded prior to the UN Women’s Conference held in Nairobi in 1985, at a time when the voices of women and their issues received very little attention in the media; it was felt necessary to identify strategies to redress the disparity.
AMWIK brings together women working in the media from across Kenya to pool their professional skills in giving visibility to women’s concerns. The Association uses training and networking to foster collaboration within the media and with other sectors of society around the issues of human rights, democracy, governance, gender based violence, equal representation of women in leadership positions and development.
Over the past two years AMWIK has produced radio programmes for national and local radio stations and has conducted 45 community radio listening sessions in 6 districts in Kenya. The Association trains about 180 media professionals each year on reporting diverse social issues and has trained and worked with 22 civil society organisations on using media effectively. The Association has trained 200 women aspirants at parliamentary and civic level on effective media use and has produced various publications for information dissemination as well as articles for publication in local newspapers.
