My name is Ubaka Hill. I am a hand drummer for over 30 yrs. I began to drum while growing up in New Jersey as a 17 year old social activist for positive change. I use percussion, poetry and song for the expansion and healing of mind body and spirit, to dissolve and heal the illusion and pain of separation. I play the Djembe drum, the didgeridoo, various percussion instruments and songs as a tool for healing, expansion and joy! I am the musical director of my ensemble "The ShapeShifters" and "The Drumsong Orchestra", a national women's performance groups from my workshops.
Since my early twenties, I have worked with and for not for profit youth organizations in New York, developing leadership programs to empower youth to speak truth to power and to heal the trauma of inner city violence, poverty and military wars.
"I use sound to forge new possibilities for new and expanded was of thinking and restore the health of women's minds, bodies and essential self with the power of frequencies of the voice and the pulse of the DRUM, heart of the Mother. I research and teach methods of application for our contemporary lives." -- u.hill
I am a professional full time musician and workshop presenter. I present my drumming workshop on the art and spirit of playing the drum, how to use the drum for sound healing, community building and experiencing joy in our lives. I teach all who want to learn. My primary focus is with "women's business", particularly for releasing the oppression of the patriarchy, re-mything our stories, our herstory and relieving the pain and suffering from our bodies and minds to reveal and restore our authentic self, to be whole, to feel possible. I currently present my workshops at the Omega Institute, Kripalu, NYC Open Center, Beloved Sacred Arts and Music Festival, Michigan Womyn's Music Festival and Born to Drum for example. I am in the recent film of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, and in documentary film Radical Harmonies. I have recored 3 CD "ShapeShifters", "Dance The Spiral Dance " Beyond The Wind".
I am the visionary and curator of the first Museum and Archives of Women's Drumming Traditions, a on line museum and co-visionary and founder of the Catskill Mountain Women's World Drum and Percussion Retreat, both locates in upstate New York. I
I consider myself to be a visionary, forward thinker who cares about those who are here now and those yet to be born. As a drummer, a women who "plays trees", I am very sensitive to what is happening with our environment, our forests, the trees in our local communities around the word. I know the importance of using the power of now to create our future. I also know that everything is connected to everything. As a drummer it is important for me to return the gift of the tree by returning trees to the Earth as a action of gratitude and respect of the gift. I also am aware of the importance of trees in our environment for clean air, water and a food source for many. This is my motivation for the MILLION WOMEN DRUMMERS GATHERING 2013. I want us to plant ONE MILLION TREES for a sustainable healthy environment and for future of women's wisdom through the pulse of the drum. We have an ancient timeless relationship with pulse, the pulse of life, the pulse of birth, the pulse of breath. Women have given all of humanity a relationship with rhythm and pulse!
The MILLION WOMEN DRUMMERS GATHERING 2013 is a gathering of women with the power of collective tension, positive action, with our drums, the voice of tress to heal the heart of the nation, to calibrate the vibration of the heart of nations for peace, reconciliation and life affirming rejuvenation for the for the benefit of all. Everything i connected.
