Martha Tholanah
I am a mother of two girls, mother-in-law of one, and grandmother of one. I am HIV-positive, and have been public about my status since 2004. I take it as a chronic manageable condition, rather than a life-threatening disease. I grew up with very low self-esteem, and I now realise it came from negative comments about my appearance as a small girl, and suffering traumatic abuse from fighters during the war of liberation in Zimbabwe. It took me a very long time to realize that no one can ever put me down, and I can define myself (the self) and feel good about me, my choices and decisions. I am learning to love myself now, and enjoying every minute of the journey, taking lessons from life with no regrets.
