Lucas Gumwell

About Me:

I am Lucas De Gumwell from South Sudan, a radio reporter, two years old in the field but enjoying every moment.
Part of my activities include sourcing for news, producing special reports/programs on women activities, advocating for an end to early and forced marriages so rampant in my society, Girl-child education and domestic violence.
Last year I worked on a radio program called "Listen to me", that gives women a chance to speak up about their lives.Their experiences of the Sudan civil war, and the new hopes after the Independence of South Sudan.

Girl-child education is a big battle that requires huge efforts to win. I feel the pain of seeing young girls being told to stop going to school and get married to men whom they do not even know their names. The worst part is when the victims of these forced and arranged marriages are under-aged usually between 13-15 years.
The health impacts are alarming. Many young girls are giving birth by cesarean operations. In 2012 alone, and estimated 250 women developed fistula. The trauma of war is not gone as well. A lot women need counseling but there is no one to help. poverty rears its ugly ahead amidst these challenges. The women are highly - spirited but they need help.
No one speaks for women. My hope is that World Pulse opens the gateway so that the women of South Sudan are heard at home and globally.

My Passions:
Seeing justice done daily, Hearing the voices of South Sudanese Women across the country and the globe
My Challenges:
Lack of capacity building to strengthen my career, transport and misunderstandings sometimes from security personnel
My Vision for the Future:
Become a professional journalist who must stand as a voice for the voiceless especially for women, girls, disabled, and other marginalised peoples in my society
My Areas of Expertise:
Radio reporting, production and presentation
My Languages:
English, Simple Arabic and Dinka
