About Me:

I am a development researcher with a bias in gender research, and education. In this regard, I have been involved in an array of research on gender, development, economic, and social issues at both grassroots, and national level. Professionally, I am a member of the Women Education Researchers of Kenya, based in Nairobi, Kenya and also the Council for the development of Social Science Research in Africa, based in Dakar, Senegal.

I believe in using research findings to inform development, and it is in this regard that in 2006 I co-founded Binti Africa Foundation, an organization that seeks to bring together like-minded individuals in the pursuit for equality and championing for increased participation of the girl child and women in development issues locally, regionally, and internationally.
Our mission is to act as a focal point for solidarity and collective action for women in pursuit of information and resources that are necessary to improve their co-existence. Our work takes place in rural primary schools where we run programs targeted at increasing the retention and transition of girls to high school. We also run sanitation programs aimed at addressing sexual maturation.
In the community, we are social entrepreneurs, engaging in innovative business models aimed at serving populations at the bottom of the pyramid.

I am an alumnus of the Santa Clara University global social benefit incubator, class of 2008, winner of the Worldbank Development Marketplace 2007, and finalist in DM 2008.

In my spare time, I participate in athletic activities. I love running and challenging myself with marathons. I have also climbed several mountains, the latest being summiting Mt.Kilimajaro, the roof of Africa.

MY PASSIONS

I believe in the popular African Bantu saying that ‘a human is a human because of other humans’. The overriding passion in my life is to bring humanness to humanity. It is for that reason that I wake up every morning and get involved with humanity.

I also have immense passion for the African continent, and I am an ardent pan-africanist. I believe that Africa has so much potential, and that there has never been a better time like now, for a new generation to reconcile with the past and meaningfully engage in shaping the prosperity of this vibrant continent, that has so much passion for life, regardless.

I extremely love reading. There is nothing that compares to relaxing with good literature after a hard days work.

MY CHALLENGES

One of my greatest challenges is making people believe that they hold a lot of power in their hands, and can do so much if only they unite and say NO to many of the social and economic challenges that they face. Getting diverse peoples to unite, despite sectarian interests, to heal the world, is always a tall order.

MY VISION FOR THE FUTURE

I would wish for Utopia. But since this is earth, I am content with trying to make this world look like another side of heaven.
I envision Africa joining the developed world. I envision a world where people’s opportunities are not curtailed simply because of where they are born, their social status, their gender, their race.
My vision is to contribute gainfully to influencing policy, especially as it affects women and children. To make governments and leaders more accountable. I am working towards engaging more actively in governance issues, and being one of the women serving in elective positions to change the socio-political-economic dynamics in my country.
