Marinieves Alba
Marinieves has worked throughout the US & Latin America, on issues related to cultural rights and equity, Afro-Latino/a issues, and global youth arts and media production. Her local and international work in the arts and media fuses media production (including print, radio, and documentary filmmaking) and cultural arts production and activism. Marinieves has produced radio segments for WBAI/Pacifica Radio, and written for numerous web and print publications reporting on race, cultural activism, and contemporary issues facing women of color in the United States. Her poetry has been featured in WE GOT ISSUES: A Young Woman's Guide to a Bold, Courageous, and Empowered Life (Inner Ocean Publishing, 2006) and Guerreras Y Cimarronas (Forthcoming, Arte Publico Press 2012). Marinieves is an Associate Produce of documentary films "Estilo Hip Hop" (2009) and "When the Spirits Dance Mambo" (2002). She is also a founding member of Afro-Puerto Rican traditional (bomba) music ensemble, Alma Moyo, and Yaya, an all women's Afro-Caribbean traditional music ensemble dedicated to preserving the African base traditions of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Marinieves is currently a Community School Director in Washington Heights, NY where she works with youth and families to address the systemic barriers to quality education facing students in New York City's public education system. Marinieves has received numerous honors recognizing her contributions to youth arts, media and activism, including but not limited to the prestigious OSI Community Fellowship of the Soros Foundation and the Gaea Foundation Sea Change Residency. she holds a B.A. in Anthropology & African American Studies from Wesleyan University and the New York University-Robert Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, where she completed a Master of Public Administration in NGO Management, with a focus on international development and human rights issues.
