Planning to Be a Parent
Every child has the right to be wanted and cherished.
Children should only be brought into safe, economically, socially, spiritually, and financially stable societies. When we stop bearing children for warring factions in warring communities, the leaders will take notice. Our bodies cry out to procreate, but if we are bearing children to be abused and otherwise used as pawns for the power brokers, we have ways to refuse.
Planned Parenthood offers conception control, services, and counseling for reproductive health:
Who We Are
We are the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) International Program, headquartered in New York with regional offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and Miami, Florida. PPFA has a long history in international women’s health care, which began in 1952 when we co-founded the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). Since 1971, we have worked in developing countries to improve women’s health through health care delivery and advocacy.
Today, we are a dedicated team of 40 staff based in the U.S., Latin America, and Africa. We see ourselves as movement builders, supporting the development of advocates and organizations dedicated to improving access to reproductive health care and protecting the rights of women. When women are able to exercise their rights and access health care, they are able to make informed decisions, free of discrimination, coercion, and violence.
What We Do
The goal of the PPFA International Program is to improve the quality of life for women by increasing access to comprehensive reproductive health care and rights.
Our work falls into two areas:
Innovative Service Delivery
We increase access to sexual and reproductive health information and services, including safe abortion, for underserved and vulnerable women, by challenging the status quo and bringing about fundamental change in the way these services are delivered.
For example, in Kenya we work with mid-level providers like nurses and midwives to deliver critical reproductive health care in some of the most remote and underserved areas.
Reproductive Rights Advocacy
We support efforts in developing countries to change the social, legal, and political climate surrounding access to comprehensive reproductive health care, including safe and legal abortion. We also work in the United States to influence foreign policies that affect women’s health and rights worldwide.
In Washington, DC, we focus on elevating women’s health issues in broader foreign and economic policy, improving the effectiveness of U.S. foreign aid for family planning and reproductive health; and we work with Planned Parenthood affiliates in the United States to mobilize their grassroots support of global health issues.
How We Work
The PPFA International Program provides small grants and ongoing support to partner organizations in developing countries.
Through regular site visits and ongoing communication, our staff provides in-depth technical assistance to our partners. Our work ranges from helping design and implement programs, improve quality of care, integrate new medical technologies, and conducting advocacy, to establishing effective organizational and fiscal management systems and generating revenue.
Over the years, we have helped numerous projects grow from ideas shared by a few passionate people into self-sustaining organizations that have changed the lives of women and their families worldwide.
