'Taking Root: the Vision of Wangari Maathai': a documentary to support activists - free in multiple languages
We have produced DVDs of the award-winning documentary 'Taking Root: the Vision of Wangari Maathai' in many languages so that women's, environmental, and human rights community activists can share in the inspiration and methods of this Nobel Peace prize winner and founder of Kenya's Green Belt Movement.
'Taking Root' is the only full-length documentary about Wangari Maathai made in her lifetime, showing both her life and her determined and brilliant approaches to social justice and environmental protection and sustainability. Activists throughout the global south have remarked on the parallels between the environmental and political concerns in Kenya and their own countries, and Wangari's ground-breaking visionary organizing using tree-planting for community empowerment and connections between critical issues.
Through a grant, DVDs have been produced with high quality soundtracks in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian, French, Arabic, and Kiswahili (all currently available with the original English version in a printed package); and Chinese, Russian, Indonesian, and Hindi (copies can currently be made without printed packages) to make it fully accessible worldwide. The DVDs include extras about the organizing methods of the Green Belt Movement and are available free of charge to organizations who want to use them to raise awareness and support activism in their own communities.
