World Pulse Online Safety and Security Toolkit
The Internet can be an incredibly empowering tool, but using it also involves risk. Raising your voice about politically-charged issues or asking tough questions can put you at risk for intimidation, surveillance or physical violence. Hackers have developed elaborate ways to try to compromise information and corrupt computers.
World Pulse strongly believes in making sure our online community is aware of the potential risks in engaging online, and ways to protect yourself online and offline. Your security is very important to us. To help you maintain your privacy and security and reduce risk, we have compiled this toolkit of information, tips, and resources to help you develop your own strategy. With these tools you can take steps to protect your safety, without compromising your bold voice.
Since World Pulse is not equipped to provide legal protection to freelance journalists and online community members, we have also included a list of organizations that may be able to offer legal assistance, additional resources and/or information. In the interest of public safety, you are free to print, post or distribute copies of the security resources as you see fit; we only ask that the normal conventions of accreditation are observed.
We encourage you to share new information, strategies and tips in your journals to promote safety among the PulseWire community as well as offline in your local community. If you have any questions after reading through the materials, please contact us and we will do our best to answer them.
