5th World Water Forum: the world's largest water event
The World Water Forum is the main water-related event in the world, aimed at putting water firmly on the international agenda. A stepping stone towards global collaboration on water problems, the Forum offers the water community and policy-and-decision-makers from all over the world the unique opportunity to come together to create links, debate and attempts to find solutions to achieve water security.
The 5th World Water Forum will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 16 to 22 March 2009.

Ministerial Process Side-event at UNCSD-16
The next step of the 5th World Water Forum political process preparations will be taken at UNCSD-16 in New York during a side event organized by the World Water Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey. The side event is titled, "Toward a Global Water Agenda: Preparing the Ministerial Process of the 5th World Water Forum". Speakers at the side-event include Klaus Töpfer, Former Executive Director of UN Environment Programme and Selim Kuneralp, Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey. The Forum Secretariat also has a stand at the CSD meeting.

Second Regional Meeting of the 5th World Water Forum
Within the framework of the 5th World Water Forum regional process, more than 150 people from 6 countries gathered on 16-17 April in Sarajevo to address issues in their respective countries relating to one of the Forum themes: “Managing and Protecting Water Resources and Their Supply Systems to Meet Human and Environmental Needs.” The two-day workshop meeting was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Turkey and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 1st Regional Meeting of the 5th World Water Forum took place in Amman, Jordan
The First Regional Meeting of the Fifth World Water Forum took place in Amman on 26-27 February 2008, with the participation of approximately 150 persons from 19 countries. Jordanian, Turkish, Israeli and Kuwaiti Ministers were present at the meeting hosted by the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Second Thematic and Regional Coordination Meeting
Following the First Coordination Meeting in November, over 400 representatives from an extensive group of stakeholders, organizations and institutions gathered for the second two-day meeting in Istanbul on 7-8 February. Workshops for the Forum’s 6 themes and 22 topics were on the agenda in order to identify a plan of action for further developing thematic and topic issues into Forum sessions. Much of this work entailed the identification of key questions for which the Forum will strive provide concrete responses through its collaborative work. Read more...

Political Process Brainstorming Session
In partnership with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and 5th Forum Secretariat, the WWC recently hosted, at its headquarters in Marseilles, a brainstorming session for the Political Process of the 5th Forum. The purpose of this two-day-meeting was to gather representatives from local authorities, parliamentarians and members of national governments within a participatory framework to discuss the format, thematic focus and the development of products related to the Forum’s Political Process. 3rd ISC and Committee Meetings
The 3rd meeting of the 5th Forum’s International Steering Committee was held in Istanbul on 6 November 2007. Among the innovations included the creation of an editorial committee, plans for a Forum Newsletter starting at the beginning of next year, validation of types and amounts of Forum registration fess, and the development of a negotiated Ministerial Agenda for water management. First Announcement of the 5th World Water Forum Released
The First Announcement of the 5th World Water Forum was released in Stockholm on Monday, 14 August, during an overflowing Side Event at the World Water Week. Approximately 150 people attended the presentation of the thematic, regional and political processes of the 5th Forum in an interactive session aspiring to answer participants’ questions and receive comments. Thank You for Contributing to the Forum’s Key Questions!
As part of the 5th World Water Forum preparatory process, we invited you to help us identify the key questions you think are most pressing and to which the water community must respond.
Since December, approximately 200 of you have answered this invitation by offering your own suggestions and votes for the crucial issues and debates that should be present in the Forum. Contribute to the 100 Key Questions for the Water Community
What are the most important issues and debates that need to be put forward during the World Water Forum? The WWC and the Secretariat of the Forum are soliciting your input on what issues you think should guide the session debates in March. We have designed a questionnaire that will enable you to vote for the questions you feel are most pertinent as related to each topic and propose other questions that may be more relevant. The questions should be policy-oriented or action-oriented and must be as concrete as possible to allow for the provision of concrete responses. 5th Forum Open Event at the Asia-Pacific Water Summit
The 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit was held in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Japan on 3-4 December, with the participation of top-level decision makers from the Asia-Pacific region. The WWC and the 5th World Water Forum assured their presence in the expo area and through the organisation of an open event to explain the 5th Forum preparatory process and its Asia-Pacific regional component. Side Event at the UCLG Congress
On 31 October, a 5th Forum side event was held at the UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments) congress in Jeju, Korea. The Council, in association with UCLG, ICLEI, and the City of Istanbul, had invited mayors in the aim of thoroughly integrating the perspectives of local authorities within the preparatory process for the 5th Forum. Call for entries: International Water & Film Events 2009
The "International Water & Film Events Istanbul 2009" was officially launched on Thursady 16 August in Stockholm at the occasion of the World Water Week. This Event, aiming at gathering films, documentaries and spots to raise awareness on water issues among the public at large, will take place in parrallel with the 5th World Water Forum. Getting the messages out: Communicators unite for the cause of water
During the 5th World Water Forum kick-off meeting in Istanbul (19-20 March), water communicators from leading water organizations and institutions came together to discuss the future of water in communications. The kick-off meeting provided an excellent opportunity for communication professionals to explore and learn about each others’ work, priorities, and strategies. The opportunity was seized to jointly devise clear messages for the 5th Forum, in line with the 2009 Forum Message “Bridging Divides for Water”. Read full article.
