Legal Tools for the Establishment of Gender Equality through International Law

The Global Justice Center has put together a manual (see attachment below) to help you use international law to advance rights. The manual starts with a general background on the role of international law and how it can be used in a domestic context. It then touches on the concept of Customary International Law and some international forums for enforcing women's rights when domestic efforts are not sufficient.

We then look at some of the tools women are using - the laws - beginning with the women's rights treaty - the bill of rights for women - the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, followed by a short discussion of other treaties with a bit of extra focus on the ICCPR. In addition to treaties, a number of other international legal tools have developed including, most recently, Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security.

The manual then reviews two other forums for enforcing women's rights - regional bodies and tribunals. It then discusses the role of constitutions and quotas in advancing rights. Finally, we provide other resources for understanding and researching international law.

important info

Hello,

Thank you for posting this information. I think it is important and useful for women,as citizens of the world to know how to take steps in the walk of womens' rights and human rights. I have at times not known how to even start to address international human rights issues. It is great to have this resource made available. Thank you!

Peace,

Jody

I am in a domestic abuse case in Spain and the constitutional, human, civil and legal rights of me and my children have been infringed upon so many times I cannot keep track. As well as international treaties repeatedly broken.

Believe me I am the first to stand up for rights of women and children in countries where they have none under the law, but what about in countries where they exist, but are not respected and flagrantly ignored.

According to Amnesty International foreign women in Spain have 1/4 of 1% chance of survival in cases of domestic abuse, immigrant women and men are raped, beaten, tortured and killed by law enforcment officials with everyone obsolved of all wrong-doing at the end of the judicial process. In January 2009 the US State Department publically criticized Spain for Human Rights violations, but I have been consistently told that there is no legal recourse.
