Inside Africa Reading Expeditions
Founded in 2008, Inside Africa Foundation is committed to reducing functional illiteracy among children in Africa. As a non-profit organization, we have programmed Reading expeditions that provides one-to-one reading assistance to primary and high school children. English speaking volunteers from Africa and other parts of the world will tutor children who struggle with basic reading and comprehension skills.
Inside Africa Foundation is at the forefront of empowering girls to be conscious of their rights, meaning that, young Girls in vulnerable situation will receive priority attention. Our organization believes that Girl related issues should not be bunched together with those of women or other children, but should be dealt with as a distinct group that need special attention and support. This is particularly important in the presence of HIV and AIDS which is taking an inordinate toll on African girls. Through the Africa Reading Expeditions, Inside Africa Foundation will become the voice of young girls who can now speak out on sensitive issues like rape, forced marriages, HIV and AIDS and pre-marital sex.
Reading capacity among children in African countries is among the lowest in the world. Limited resources, lack of reading materials and encouragement by some African governments adversely affect the reading culture throughout most of Africa. Inside Africa’s Reading Expeditions is a multi-year initiative that focuses on promoting reading among children in Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Sierra-Leone, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Our hope is to have at least One Million African children going through the the Africa Reading Program by 2015.
