Afghanistan Café

Under the Taliban rule, women in Afghanistan faced a life of darkness, without rights and removed from the public eye. The US military cited this oppression as a justification for intervention in 2001, and as war ravaged Afghanistan, women’s cultural value and bodies were used as a battleground. While women’s rights have become a symbol for the conflict, women’s voices have consistently been ignored as groups and governments move forward to dictate the country’s future.

After nearly 30 years of war, Afghan women are beginning to take hold of their future as they emerge from extremist forces and enter society as active participants. With an increased emphasis on gender mainstreaming and accountability within the global aid agenda, there is now a window of opportunity for gender roles and attitudes to shift and for women’s involvement and leadership to rise in the rebuilding process.

This is a safe discussion forum for Afghan women and supporters of their voices to converge and discuss the issues and obstacles that women are facing, and to share ideas and solutions for building a society based on gender inclusion and equality. Here you are encouraged to share your own personal stories and experiences as a woman in Afghanistan, pose a question to the group for greater discussion, tell us about a project you’re working on to empower Afghan women and share your visions for the future of your country and her people.

Salam aleikom!
