Need: Urgent need of mobile medical van for poor rural/tribal women

Gram Bharati Samiti (GBS) has been working in 50 villages in the Rajasthan state of India among the rural/tribal women to empower them in terms of raising awareness on reproductive and sexual health, prevention of HIV/AIDS and other STDs and pregnancy related issues. Already over 5,000 women of backward castes and classes have joined SHG (Self Help Groups) promoted by GBS.

The area of villages GBS is working in is a most backward one in district Jaipur. There are no health care facilities in and around a radius of 30 kms. Many women are suffering from number of STD/RTIs, but either they are not aware of the risk and consequences of the diseases or can’t afford to go the hospitals based in Jaipur or other towns. Several women die before reaching the hospitals due to complicated delivery cases.

That’s why we very urgently need a mobile medical van equipped with necessary medical tools and equipments.

Perhaps COTA can help get you started on fundraising/promoting your request? What we do is interview global and regional change agents on internet radio, promote the show, and establish a donation account for you (you must have a PayPal account and be registered as a legal entity).

Hello Gram,

Great to hear of your project and important work. I have close colleagues in Mumbai who work with the Lawyer's Collective, including the director, Anand Grover. I suggest you contact them (use Google to find them) and I will also invite them to join PulseWire where you can directly discuss how to access a van.

Another lead: Global Fund for Women. I know Muadi Mukenge who heads their Africa project but they fund many projecs in India.

Another lead: SAATHI, a network of Indian advocates that are raising money in teh Indian US communmity to support AIDS projects in India. We have invited SAATHI to join PulseWire and I will see which members are online in our community already now.

Doctors of the World, an offshoot of Doctors without Borders, has a number of such mobile projects and may be able to assist you in finding either a donor or lead for this van. I also just heard of a medical group from Texas that is looking to support projects like yours and also have their physicians do short stints.

Finally, I would suggest considering approachign one of the generic HIV drug manufacturers like Hetero, Ranbaxy or Dr. Reddy's. They may have a great interest in the outreach you are doing and can assist.

Please feel fee to look at my profile on PulseWire and I'll stay in touch.

Also Gram,

you might get in touch with Sally Fisher of Intersect, who is on PulseWire. She runs projects in several regions of India. You might look at her profile. I'll let Sal know about your posting.

Urgent need for a mobile medical van

Hello dear Anne-Christine,

Thank you for your valuable suggestions.

I am aleady closely associated with Sally Fisher and we have been working in collaboration with each other for past many years. In fact she had suggested us to join Pulsewire.

It would be great if you kindly introduce me with Global Fund for Women and Doctors of the world.

With kind regards,

I will do that - introduce you

Hi Gram,

Global Fund for Women is an NGO based in San Francisco. You might contact Muadi Mukenge, who directs the Africa program and I can find out for you who is their Asia program officer. www.globalfundforwomen.org. You can say I referred you...

Another group is Firelight Foundation, based in Santa Crus (www.firelightfoundatoin.org). Contact: Jennifer Astone, Executive Director.

Other key foundations: American Jewish World Service www.ajws.org. Contact: Maitri Moraji.

I have to find my contact for Doctors of the World. In St. Petersburg, Sasha Tsekhanovitch is a former Dr.s of the World who set up Humanitarian Action.. he will likely know the contacts for that org. His org runs a mobile van to help drug users in urban Moscow, and he's a terrific guy, working in HIV field particularly.

I spoke to Sally after I saw your post. Glad I can help you.

Last suggestion: Contact Anand Grover at Lawyer's Collective in Mumbai... he's well know and well connected and might have some leads. He's a friend, so feel free to use my name.

These are all public contacts so others can also feel free to contact these individuals esp the donors related to HIV projects for which they seek funding.

Re: leads

Dear Bhawaniji, Namaste! A belated welcome to PulseWire. So great to see your photo -- makes our virtual connection more real. :) I hope this finds you well.

Have you been able to follow up with any of Anne-Christine's suggestions above? Any responses? Do let me know if you need me to follow up at my end with any of the leads.

Best regards,
Ramya

Thank you very much dear Ramyaji, for your encouraging message. I am delighted to get connected with you.

Yes I contacted 3 of those suggested by Anne-Christine. Of them one Firelight Foundation responded that they are working only in 7 countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

I didn't receive any response from the other 2 e.g. Global Fund for Women and American Jewish World Service. Of course I need your support if you kindly follow them up.

Looking for your response, with regards,
Bhawani

Salvation Army went Global

Hi. A friend of mine informed me that the Salvation Army does a lot more than sell used furniture! Here is the link to their work in India. In addition to checking with the office in India, I would try to send the request to one in the U.S. They may have more funds readily available. Just a thought. The holidays may make that a challenge though...

Dear Elizabeth,

Thank you for your kind information. I contacted The Salvation Army personnel in India, but they say as presently they don't have any provision of supporting such requirements. It would be great if you can explore with your friend in the U.S.

With regards,

Bhawani

Bummer!

I will take a look. Couldn't hurt. Does GBS have a website? The Salvation Army would probably require a formal written request for this type of contribution. I will take a look around and let you know if I find anything...

Lengthy Link

Here is the link to the Salvation Army headquarters. This page indicates that the General is responsible for allocating resources. His link in on this page. I am not passing the buck! :0) I just think that you may know someone within GBS that has a great request letter or form available for submission! Let me know if you still need my assistance...I will continue to think on it.

Hello dear Anne-Christine,

Just wanted to share with you that we couldn't get any positive response from any where in this regard and still need supoport for the medical van. As suggested by you we contacted American Jewish World Service and they further suggested one agency MIVA. We submitted a proposal to them but they said they don't support in South Asia.

May I request you kindly to advise some new sopurces?

regards,

Bhawani
