OPERATION SMILE in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Operation Smile International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through the provision of free surgery to people suffering from cleft lip, cleft palate and other correctable facial deformities.

As an international charity for children, we measure ourselves by the joy we see on all of the faces we help. At Operation Smile, we're more than a charity. We're a mobilized force of medical professionals who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery and related medical care for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.
Since 1982, Operation Smile — through the help of dedicated medical volunteers — Operation Smile has provided more than 3.5 million comprehensive patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and adults born with facial deformities. Our work creates a lasting global impact. Our mission is also to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training to health care professionals in developing countries and strengthening healthcare systems to enable more children in some of the poorest areas in the world to gain access to effective treatment.

Operation Smile is looking for a Programs Coordinator to be based in Kinshasa, DRC (local position)

Title: Program Coordinator
Travel: Frequent Domestic and some International travel


DUTIES Under the supervision of the Program officer and Africa Programs Manager, the Program Coordinator is responsible for the following:

The Program Coordinator will work with the Program Officer and Africa Programs Manager on the preparation, execution, and reporting of all surgical programs in the DRC. They will work to help further develop the 5 year strategic plans for programs in the DRC including timelines. The Program Coordinator and Africa Program Manager are responsible for all the medical volunteers and all surgical programs.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Program Officer and Africa Program Manager with all logistics pertaining to programs of Operation Smile in the DRC including fact finds, working with in-country hosts, leading the mission, and reporting on it. She/he will work with the Program Officer and Africa Education and Media team to help to incorporate our sponsors in missions through employee volunteer programs and press conferences to promote the relationships. This job will also involve assisting the Africa Regional Director in fundraising efforts from local companies when working in neighbouring countries as well as local media to create more brand awareness in the countries.


The Program Coordinator is responsible for activities pertaining to Operation Smile in the DRC surgical programs including:

Medical Mission/ Fact Finds/ Strategic plan for programs:

•Ensure the adequate execution of activities accordingly to the objectives of the strategic plan and budget established.
•Work with the Program Officer to facilitate recruitment of medical volunteers and the procurement of medical supplies and drugs within the DRC
•Help plan execute/lead missions within the DRC
•Manage and keep on file the participation of medical volunteers in missions outside the DRC, assisting with logistics (flights/visas/paperwork) and keeping track of their goings and comings.
•Work with the Media and Education Department in helping to facilitate medical volunteer’s participation involvement in workshops and conferences outside of the Region
•Help develop a strategic plan for programs within the DRC and for the growth and sustainability of programs within each partner country.
•Participate in Fact Finds and assessment trips to set up and prepare for programs in new sites/countries for missions
•Plan and prepare all that is necessary to facilitate a successful surgical mission working diplomatically with all necessary parties.
•Help and eventually lead missions throughout the DRC ensuring safe, fun, and smooth programs
•Working with the Program Officer and Africa Programs Manager for volunteer management and to develop a rewarding system (volunteer retreat, volunteer of the quarter etc)
•Assist in creating networks and support to ensure smoothly run, safe, and cost-effective medical missions with new and existing private and corporate partners.
•Recruit medical volunteers and continuously expand.
•Work with Media and Education Department to obtain coverage and recognition for Operation Smile missions, fund-raising events, board members, and major donors.
•Provide accurate reports on programs to help plan and develop future ones and to provide feedback to our sponsors and volunteers

The Program Coordinator will at all times, act with professionalism in all activities and will maintain the confidentiality of the privileged management and donor information. The Program Coordinator will readily accept new assignments consistent with the mission of Operation Smile.

III. Qualifications

•University degree in social sciences, medical sciences, public health, programme management or any similar field

•Experience in humanitarian organizations, NGO
•Skills in coordination and implementation in community health programmes
•Experience in public events management
•Knowledge of computer software (word, excel, power point, outlook)

Communication and language
•Adequate oral and written ability
•Knowledge of French, Lingala, Swahili and English (working level)

Team work
•Demonstrate the ability to work with diverse population, multicultural environment and respect of diversity
•Willingness to work evenings and weekends and travel frequently
