Offer: +Acumen Online Course

Storytelling for Change is a 4-week course that will help you better connect with your audience, whether in a meeting with one person or in a presentation to hundreds of people. To make this course widely accessible, it is free.

By the end of this 4-module course, you will better be able to:

Tell personal stories that help you to connect with others in order to inspire change
Use a set of specific storytelling skills to tell powerful stories
Understand and demonstrate the four dimensions of The Ariel Group’s Leadership PRESence model in telling stories
Appreciate the importance of how you present yourself and connect with others (i.e. your “presence”) in leading change initiatives

There are no in-person teachers or facilitators for this course. You will work through the course with a group of classmates we call your “lab group”. You must find your lab group before you sign up for the course.

Course content will consist of readings, online videos and discussions/activities. Each week, you will receive an email with the materials for the upcoming lab. The materials will consist of two things:

Lab prep (1-2 hours): To be completed before your lab group meets
Lab guide (typically 2 hours): To be completed together with the rest of your lab group when you meet. Upon completing each lab, the lab group leader for the week will be asked to fill out a simple feedback form to share the group’s progress.

Registration Deadline: May 5, 2013
Start Date: May 11, 2013
End Date: June 14, 2013

Register your group by May 5th, 2013 to be eligible for the course.
You must register with a minimum of 2 people.

Time commitment: 4-5 hours per week

Note: If there is anyone willing to form a group with me, please do let me know.

Most welcome!

Dear Anab,

You're most welcome to join our group! At the moment, there are 2 members (myself and another World Pulse member). Since the deadline for registration is 5th of May, we want to wait till 2nd of May so that others can join us if they want. Also, please note that since we all live in different countries, we may have to communicate via Skype to finish group projects. Let me know if you are still interested to be part of this group.

Warm regards,
Monica

Hi Monica,

I'm interested. I don't quite understand how the group component works, but I guess we'll find out. Room for one more?

Welcome to the group!

Dear Maya,

Certainly, there is room for more. Welcome to the group!

This is what the site says about group work:

We recommend signing up with a group that is all physically located in the same place. Much of the value of this course derives from the in-person, peer-to-peer learning that happens between group members. With that said, we have had groups cover many of the labs over Skype or Google+ hangouts so it is possible to have a remote group.

No, the time in which you review the prep material each week is up to you. Similarly, the time you choose to meet with your lab group each week is a decision between you and your group. So it’s a good idea to consider all your availability when forming a group.

We set the schedule regarding what topic to cover each week but you are free to meet with your group within each week whenever it is convenient for the group. Since we are offering this course globally, across different time zones, it isn’t realistic to deliver the content at a specific time; therefore, we will e-mail each week’s material out on the Thursday of each week and within that week you are expected to review the prep material and meet your group to complete that week’s lab (For example, Week 1 material will be sent to you on May 9th and we recommend that your group meets between May 11-17).

Let me know if you're still interested in forming a group with us.

Best wishes,
Monica

I did read that. Thanks for bringing it to my attention again though. Sometimes we look at it a different way the second time.

Dear Maya,

Welcome to the group!

I have noted down your contact info. Just need to see if we can all co-ordinate our time schedules since we all are scattered in different locations!

I believe Acumen will have our information to send updates. I am not sure who else will be participating but we'll get to know the exact details as the registration and the course itself progress.

Hello Monica
Sorry for the late reply. While this sounds very interesting, I am not sure how I will make it work with the different time zones :-(
I would have to withdraw to give room to someone who might be interested.

Thank you. Please let me know how it went. I can't wait to hear all about it.

Solutions

Dear Anab,

Not a problem at all! However, I would not encourage you to forgo this opportunity because of time differences. There are still many options open for you to avail this opportunity:

1) I am part of a 3 member group. I will consult with others to see if one of us can join you. Each team is required to have only 2 members.

2) You can post an offer/journal post seeking team members here or you can contact with people near you.

3) On the course website, there is an option to find a group based on location. You can try that too.

4) Since the registration deadline is very near, you may not have all the time to take the above steps. However, once the registration deadline is over, you can sign up to their watch-list so that you are notified well in advance of any course openings.

Best,
Monica

Clarification

Just wanted to clarify this sentence: "Each team is required to have only 2 members."

By that, I mean each group needs to have at least 2 members. I guess the maximum limit is 4 members.

Monica

Facebook group

I am receiving the messages, but not seeing any join button maybe because the group isn't listed in the directory (maybe we'd need to resort to Facebook group - you'll find my ID in first journal - please feel free to connect once you have created the Facebook group).

A Facebook group is also better because I just realized we have messaging limits (I received this when I tried to send you this message - You have exceeded your message sending limit for now. You can send your next message in 18 hours 43 min 35 sec.):

The recent group invite message that I received:

Dear PulseWire member,

You have been invited to join the PulseWire group 'Storytelling for Change ' at World Pulse. Welcome!

Description: A WorldPulse group taking Acumen's course on "Storytelling for Change."

Message:

Hi guys, apparently the first invite didn't go through. Trying again.

I started to create a Facebook group, but need your Facebook names to be able to do that. I'll ask Al for hers as well.

Facebook ID & name:
Monica Islam - facebook.com/monica.islam09
Alethia Madden - confirm with Al (IamTruth) about the Facebook ID / link

For the first meeting, any time you both set is fine as long as it's not between 11 pm - 8 am. For the later meetings, I will let you both know the time that I am available depending on my university classes.

Al provided a great meeting time planner: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meetingtime.html?iso=20130512&p1=1...

I am not registering Anab as a team member without her consent and information. We will have to register only the 3 of us. I am sure we'll share our knowledge with her and others, and that she can definitely make the best use of other alternatives that I posted for her.

Note: The messaging limit is still there for me. So I am communicating via comments here until a Facebook group is created.

Best,
Monica

Okay great. Looking forward. Will need to know about a day or two in advance what time we're settling on for the first meetup... That's all for now... Actually, wait... Monica I think you've just outed me on here. :) Wouldn't it be easier if we communicated via email or facebook from now on?

Al.

Time, Facebook

Currently, I don't have time restrictions so any time that you both set is fine as long as it's not between 11pm - 8 am Bangladesh time.

Since Maya does not login on Saturday and a Facebook group was not created, but urgently needed, I had to reveal the Facebook name and ID here so she could create one asap. But there are many profiles with that name, so we both still need your exact Facebook ID/link to connect to you on Facebook. You could also add me up. My Facebook ID is mentioned in the post you replied to.

Best,
Monica

Hey All: Sorry about the

Hey All:

Sorry about the delayed response on this. Hope you're doing great. I've been pretty good myself (maybe a little anxious about the outcome of the WP program, but otherwise okay).

Okay, so re the acumen course and the question of time zones, I totally agree that trying to synchronize our schedules for meetings could be a bit tricky. But, it's not impossible. The 'meetups' could work for all of us with a little forethought and planning. I just tried using the online world cock meeting planner to see how the times would sync for May 12th and here are the results:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meetingtime.html?iso=20130512&p1=1...

I'd be good either between 7:00 and 9:00 am or 10:00am and noon Kingston time (see schedule for corresponding times). By the way, I just plugged in various cities in your respective countries to gauge time. Not sure if I guessed your locations correctly. If not, please forgive me.

Otherwise, I'm good to go.

Please see email for my personal details.

(Also, just realized the limitations on here re sending group emails. Bummer.)

Okey dokes, that's my two cents for now. If anything else let me know.

Bestest,

Al
