Need: Call for Collaboration: Web Mapping Software

I have planned to launch a web mapping initiative in my city that allows women to map the areas where they have been subjected to gender-based violence as well as to map the form of gender-based violence (rape, stalking, yelling nasty propositions, beating, etc.).

It would be great if the members here could suggest an user-friendly interface or software that allows customized web mapping. If you or someone you know is interested to create one, please get in touch with me!

Other ideas are welcome too! Feel free to tell me.

Crowdmap

Hi Monica! I have seen this interface from Ushahidi called Crowdmap used for similar projects: https://crowdmap.com/

Let us know how it goes!

Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for sharing! I am trying this out now to see how it goes. There are some other concerns which I shall be sharing once the basic structure of the map is ready.

Here are the concerns

I have created an account, registered my URL. But I am stuck with the map itself. How do I import/create a map of my city? Also, I think it's best if a web developer starts working on customizing it while I seek funding to pay him/her as well as for marketing campaigns, SMS alert campaigns, etc. Please let me know if you or someone you know wants to work on this map. Overall, I am satisfied and happy with the platform. It's taking me close to achieving something meaningful for the vulnerable women (including myself) of my city!

Other concerns:

1) Will this platform remain free of charge? It will be unfortunate if the map becomes really popular and useful but the map has to be discontinued if suddenly the platform decides to charge its users.

2) As mentioned in the FAQ as well, what to do about spammers/ill-motivated people who provide false reports?

3) How can people who do not have access to the Internet find this useful? Any cost-effective ideas would be welcome.

Bonjour Monica.

Crowdmap

Hi Monica,

I work with Ushahidi on various projects including our general elections on March 4th 2013 (Kenya). I recommend crowdmap. I have used it and still do. Check out an example here: https://lawyers.crowdmap.com/
There is another by google that I am waiting for a friend to tell me once I get the info I will share.

Dear Binti,

Thank you so much for sharing this resource! I am checking it out right now. Some of my concerns:

Any update?

Hello dear Binti,

Any update from the Ushahidi team? :)

Regards,
Monica

Just in Time

Hi Monica,

What a coincidence that as you are asking about the update I just got a response from the Ushahidi team. Here is the response:
The Ushahidi platform is a free and open source platform that allows for information collection, aggregation and visualization on the map. Information is fed into an ushahidi instance via web form, email, twitter, SMS and our mobile applications on the android and iOS platform.

There are two options for deploying the Ushahidi platform.
1.Crowdmap: this is the easiest, out of the box solution, as you can get setup on your own in just minutes. It's simple and easy to use, and it resides on our servers. All you have to do is sign up here:-
http://crowdmap.com/mhi/signup

2.Ushahidi core: you can download the main application at http://download.ushahidi.com. Follow directions to setup and install it on your own server. The value here is that you get to do all types of customization to the site, so it's much more personalized. The complete manual on how to use ushahidi can be found here:-
http://bit.ly/gqL7ZR

In as far as use of the platform, its open source, meaning that its available for download and use at absolutely no cost. Its free of charge.

Take a look at the following sites to help you familiarize yourself more with the platform.
http://wiki.ushahidi.com
http://forums.ushahidi.com
http://community.ushahidi.com

Feel free to get in touch if you need any further assistance. Let me know if this is helpful

Helpful indeed

Dear Binti,

Thank you so much for your informative response! This is helpful indeed. The manual in particular is making it easier to customize and navigate through the site. I am glad this is open source. I will be using the first option for deploying the Ushahidi platform for now. If the project demands it, we will shift to option 2 which requires own servers.

Thank you once again! Planning to launch a basic, pilot project very soon. I shall update here once it's done.

Warm regards,
Monica

GREAT

I am glad that you found the information helpful. Keep updating me if the deployment is meeting your specifications. In case of any questions do not hesitate I'll be quick to forward them to the ushahidi team or give my input whenever I can.
I wish you success!

crowdmap - I recommend it too

I have just subscribed to and will start using in the near future for a crowdsourced project related to accessible cities in Brazil.
I recommend it because besides being user-friendly, it is available in several languages and also open to customization to other languages (crowdsourcing).
Please share here with us your choice of a tool and also its further use or developments. Thanks in advance!

I meant I was not sure you

I meant I was not sure you had already chosen a specific tool (like crowdmap) and would like to know more about (your choice as well as you evaluation, for the required purposes, of any chosen tool).
