Need: Volunteer Opportunity at TYSA Kenya
Trans-nzoia Youth Sports Association (TYSA) is a not for profit Community Based Organization delivering value based sports programmes in rural Kenya. Founded in 2001, TYSA endeavors to Inspire and Empower Young People to develop knowledge, skills and their status by increasingly exposing them to sports, education, and training and livelihood opportunities.
TYSA is currently implementing the girls “UWEZO” project supported by the Kenya Community Development Foundation. The overall objective of the project is to socially empower Girls, and student teenage mothers to actively participate in their development and community life. TYSA intends to achieve effective institutional operation and management of youth by developing a comprehensive Youth Leader Education manual. The manual will enhance structured training for lifelong education, peace and youth thematic programs.
Among the impacts expected are equal participation and decision making of women in social, political and economic life of the community, increased opportunities for participation of children and full participation of disabled children in community life. The uniqueness of this project lies in how the capacity of beneficiaries is built through value base sports as a mobilization tool. Beneficiaries continuously learn participatory approaches of monitoring peaceful coexistence and protecting their rights. Affirmative action tracking tool offers unique experience where children and youth monitor if their rights are being abused and demand action.
TYSA Proposes and intends to contribute to future interventions that address poverty, peace and conflict transformation, enhancement of gender equity in the new constitutional dispensation, good governance and human rights. Through strengthening civic engagement, peace building and youth participation, the target youth will be mobilized and empowered in non violent conflict resolution mechanisms.
Having operated as a Community Based Organization since inception, TYSA’s membership, beneficiaries and activities have expanded over time. In order to widen its mandate and scope, TYSA’s application for upgrade to Non-Governmental status has received approval from the Kenya Governments NGO coordination board. This is expected to heighten TYSA’s profile to National status as well as extend its scope of collaboration.
