Need: Volunteer with Breast Ironing Campaign in Cameroon

Pubescent girls in Cameroon are being tortured by their own mothers. Using
objects like grinding stones, mortar pestles or hammers heated over hot
coal, mothers "iron" their daughters' developing breasts to destroy any
indication of emerging womanhood.

Breast ironing is typically carried out by the girl's mother who will say
she is trying to protect the girl from sexual harassment, rape and AIDS;,
to prevent early pregnancy that would tarnish the family name; or to allow
the girl to pursue education rather than be forced into early marriage. It
is mostly practiced in Cameroon, where boys and men may think that girls
whose breasts have begun to grow are ready for sex.

to assist the grassroots effort that is already on the ground there:
--sex educators to train mothers a new approach to adolescent girls and sexuality;
to teach girls about how to avoid or rebuff unwanted advances;
to teach girls about menses and how to avoid pregnancy.
(These topics are currently not taught to adolescent girls.)
---health specialist to teach mothers the dangers of this practice
--women`s rights advocate interested in working with the campaign team
--media experts who can help change public attitudes:
not portray girls & women as sex objects; put emphasis on girl child education
and developing the capabilities & life goals for girls.
--videographer to tape Awareness Campaign
--sound engineer to mix and master music tape for Awareness Campaign

This is a volunteer position. Applications accepted on a rolling basis. No end date.
