Need: Travel Grant to Documentary Festival in Toronto
I am new to this site and am hoping I utilise it well in the future! But first things first: I am a young independent filmmaker based in Johannesburg, South Africa. My documentary project has been selected by South Africa's National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) as part of their portfolio to be showcased at the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival. It is a feature documentary looking at the prejudice and ill-treatment surrounding widows in South Africa once they lose their husbands, and how they fall prey to discrimination by their in-laws. As part of "tradition" a widow is kicked out of her marital home and has all of her property repossesed by her husband's family once he passes. Some even have their children taken from them, or are forced to marry the deceased husband's brother. Through this story we are exploring these widows' rights to defend themselves under South African law, as well as working on a media campaign to help raise awareness of the work done by a widow's rights group based in Johannesburg. We are currently raising the funds for production for the documentary, and the trip to Toronto is part of this effort. There I will take part in the pitching forums to pitch to broadcasters and funding organisations, as well as many development workshops where I will learn how to market my documentary and better tell this important story.
I am looking for emergency funds or a travel grant to attend the festival, in just over five weeks and am struggling to find any links for art travel grants for Africans. It will cost approximately R40 000 (US$ 5000) for me to attend the festival as a delegate in order to represent my documentary. If anybody knows of any emergency grant funds I can contact I would really appreciate the links..
