Need: Computers or laptops for training girls and women in rural community
I have finally set up my NGO and wish to announce my take off project on computer training for girls and women in rural community where I reside.
Grassroots and Gender Development Center (GGDC) is a Non-Governmental Organization endowed with a large task of supporting grassroots development in Nigeria. It focuses on improving the livelihood of the community through participatory and transformative programs and advocate for policies to protect the rights of vulnerable groups. It seeks to build a platform of concerned individuals and organizations to address the challenges of women, girls and children and take action for change.
Grassroots and Gender Development Center seek to empower girls in ijanikin community of Lagos State, Nigeria with basic computer skills and internet use. At present, the center is operating on one computer to five girls which does not ensure effective learning. We desire to scale up to the standard of the developed world of one laptop to one girl to help us achieve our target of 40girls by the end of 2012.
There are large numbers of girls, who have completed secondary education but lack basic computer skills. Most of them belong to poor families. Their parents are mostly agricultural laborers, hawkers, vendors and domestic servants earning very small wages and are living below poverty line. Educating girls helps to make communities and societies healthier, wealthier and safer and can also help to reduce child deaths, improve maternal health, tackle the spread of HIV/AIDS infection and reduce unwanted pregnancy among girls, sexual exploitation, abuse and pressures for early marriage. It also underpins the achievement of all the other MDGs.
Computer training is a Long Term Impact Project which contributes to achievement of UN Millennium goals, helping close the gender gap in education. It is an effective long-term investment, helping to eradicate poverty by enhancing education, broadening options and offering new opportunities. It offers great potential in terms of exposing the girls to much-needed computer technology and related opportunities. This exposure is helping to prepare the girls for our technology-aided world and for positions of future leadership.
I need more desktops or laptops to make training effective. Also, we need external hardware like printers, scanner, camera, projector and UPS.Generator for electricity backup
