Need: Looking Sponsor for the Master of Advanced Studies in Peace and Conflict Transformation

Salaams,

This is Ruun Abdi from Somalia. A research assistant at PDRC/GSO (Puntland Development Research Centre, Puntland, Somalia) in the department of Social Reconciliation on Gender’s perspective as well as mainstreaming of youth, minorities/marginalized groups since May 2009. From 15th November 2010 till 7th April 2011, I participated in the Voices of Our Future 2010 training program (http://www.worldpulse.com/pulsewire/programs/world-pulse-voices-of-our-f...), a five months online training program in Web 2.0, Citizen Journalism and women’s empowerment hosted by Worldpulse (www.worldpulse.com). I also participated in the Peace Ambassador Training, which is a 20 weeks virtual Certification program hosted by the Shift network which run from 9th March till 20th July 2011 (http://www.peaceambassador.ning.com/). The training addressed Five Pillars of Peacebuilding which are:
a) Deep Personal Peace.
b) Healing Personal and Collective Wounds.
c) Communicating Peace.
d) Mastering System Change.
e) Organizing for a New World.

LOOKING BACK – Somalia being an African country whereby most of its society believed girls should remain home, ladies should keep their voices low and follow whatever been told without questioning, do the house chores and boys go to schools, and so on. My parents always encouraged me to pursue my education, despite the challenges of growing up in a country rocked by civil war and violence. I persevered to become one of the nine students who scored grade A in our high school. Indeed, I became the first lady in my school and throughout Puntland state to score grade A and won a scholarship for higher education in another country. Even when we were in Mogadishu, in the midst of civil war and terror my parents taught us at home. My parents never let us suffer in the same way some other kids did. They gave us every opportunity to learn and make ourselves strong person ready to face every challenge in the society. So it directed me to work for the positive impact in my society and the world. I am proud to have such parents and it’s my turn to make them feel proud. Due to that experience is why I always encourage young girls to pursue their education, be hard workers, be committed to building their future and become the next change agents and leaders.

THE WAY I SEE - I always want to make my communication skills- a part of peace and community development. I desire to be the expert in the international communication and the part of Peacebuilding and community development. I believe in the power of communication and media and how it can help on development of the society and promoting peace. Empowerment causes development - development only succeeds when every member of the society is empowered.

World Peace Academy & ME – The knowledge and experience I gain from Master of Advanced Studies in peace and Conflict Transformation will help me pass to my community where I live and work as well as my colleagues and coworkers so that we serve the community in a much better way. Attending this course will enable me to gain the main concept of conflict transformation and how it could be related to both genders. After completion of this course I am pretty sure I am going to learn a lot of new things and ways/techniques to integrate it.
Being selected as one of the students to participate in the World Peace and Academy would build the confidence in me and I believe attending to this course would be extremely empowering and motivating. It would be the best opportunity to learn and to raise voice against the many social issues that has created the obstacles for women empowerment and community development in peacebuilding. It would certainly help me gain knowledge on global perspectives and also use it back to the activities I carry within the community.

You can support me to represent Somalia and attend the Master of Advanced Studies in peace and Conflict Transformation by making donations. The Academy offers a scholarship of a 50% reduction of the normal study fee which means that instead of the 15 000 CHF the student only has to pay 7500 CHF (8,478.41 USD). Your helping hand can give me the platform to attend that course. If you want to donate - does not matter how much! You can contact me with my email: m_azhari9@hotmail.com Any help is welcome.
