The Association of African Women for Research and Development (AAWORD) was created in December 1977 in Dakar by a group of African women researchers who, aware of the low level of the presence of women in research, and convinced that research is a crucial factor for the success of any development programme, have decided to undertake any activity relating to research, advocacy and training with a view to improving the status of women and transforming gender relations in African societies.

Under the direction and supervision of the Executive Secretary, the Communication Officer will:

Assist in formulating and coordinating the communication, information, sensitizisation and advocacy activities of AAWORD. His/her responsibilities willinclude:

Develop, implement and follow up a communication/information and advocacy strategy;
Develop strong relationships and partnerships with various target groups : national groups, sister organisations, African governments, the African Union Gender Directorate, the UN Commission on the Status of Women, development partners, etc.
Take part in the organisation of AAWORD seminars, conferences and other training and sensitizing activities.

Develop a partnership with the media. To that end, he/she will have to:

Build strong relationships with representatives of the main organs of the press and electronic media in countries where AAWORD operates.
Organise and facilitate media coverage of AAWORD activities and events;
Disseminate AAWORD position papers
Arrange interviews, press conferences and give conferences on themes related to AAWORD activities
Coordinate welcoming activities of AAWORD nationals and foreign visitors

Produce, publish and disseminate AAWORD researches and magazines. To that end he/she will have to:

Produce AAWORD quarterly magazine - ECHO,
Collect articles and documents of interest for AAWORD work
Write articles, press release, information documents and notes for on-line circulation
Disseminate AAWORD publications and productions
Update AAWORD website.


At least a BA degree in communication, journalism, public relations or related field
Knowledge of various information and communication issues;
Ability to conceive, develop and implement great information campaigns
Ability to analyse and quickly make the most of information from various sources
Ability to produce various clearly and concisely written information documents
Ability to make oral presentations before various audience
Proven professional skills and command of gender issues.
Show team spirit
Demonstrated knowledge of new technologies practice and limits.


At least 3 year demonstrated experience in more and more important responsibilities in the field of information, public relations and strategic communication.
Experience in contacts and networking management with the media, NGOs, Governments, national and international organisations, the civil society, etc.


English and French are AAWORD working languages. For this position written and oral French is compulsory. Knowledge of written and oral English is required.
