Need: Vol surgeons needed in DRC to help fistula rape survivors

HI all. I'm just back from meeting with a nurse in Goma region of Democratic Republic of Congo. She reports having about 14 women women needing emergency fistula surgeries a week who are being turned away from clinics she is referring them to as they have no capacity to deal with high number of women needing this surgical intervention. If you are an MD surgeon or in touch with any groups who are working on such issues, please get in touch with me and I'll pass on the contact.
Thanks, Anne-christine d'Adesky - WE-ACTx

Hey there, AC!

Here's a link I found to a group that works on fistula in this region. I don't know them personally, but surely someone in your circles does!

Check it out...

Heal Africa

Heal My People ("Guéris Mon Peuple") began in 2003 in response to the high rate of sexual violence being committed against women and girls. The objective is to identify women and girls who have been raped or who have fistulae, and offer treatment. A network of local counselors refer them to appropriate care. The goal of the program is to enable the women and girls to enter into a healing process, and accompany them, so that ultimately they re-enter society as productive and healed people.

Update on DRC needs ...

HI all,

Good news- sharing that Lyn Lusi at Heal Africa clinic in Goma informed me that she has just gotten a new volunteer surgeon who is helping to provide fistula operations at that clinic, and they expect to be able to decrease the backlog of women needing this critical service.

But there are still very serious needs for surgeons who can do fistula operations. Please contact me if you know of any possible volunteers. Thanks, AC

mental health programs

Hello Anne-christine d'Adesky,
I am very interested in knowing about the mental health focus in DRC.
I am currently working at The SAGE Project as the clinical director of the mental health clinic. On of my dreams is to take EMDR ( a therapeutic modality that addresses trauma) to to places where women are in need of trauma work within their own cultural context. I have many ideas and would love to have this conversation with someone.
I am in Egypt for two more days and then back to SF.
Thank you very much for the work you do,
Rachel Erwin

mental health in congo

hi dear
talking about mental health in congo, especially the eastern part of congo . the situation is critical due to many problems women have serious issues, some in their families and even in the community. after being raped its very hard to be get your normal life ,this women cant go back to their families cause they are seen as "raped ones". its hard to even to explain the trauma this women go through.
