Organization Profile:

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 5 million children by constructing more than 1,400 schools, establishing over 11,000 libraries, publishing 550 new children’s book titles in 22 local languages, and putting over 10,000 girls onto long-term, holistic scholarships.

Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$38 million and our global staff numbers over 420. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have an Asia Regional Office located in New Delhi, a Southern Africa Regional Office in Pretoria, and program offices in Colombo, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, Vientiane, and we are setting up operations and hiring staff for a new office in Tanzania.
Position Overview:

The Global Program Officer will provide guidance, support and technical assistance for the Girls’ Education program. This includes oversight and support for activities at the regional and country levels. The position will report directly to the Director of the Girls’ Education program and will have regular interactions with global, regional, and country program teams as well as other functional teams at Room to Read. This position will be based at Room to Read’s Global Office in San Francisco, CA but will required to travel internationally approximately 30% of the time.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Work in collaboration with other Girls’ Education team members to support Girls’ Education program activities;
Assist in reviewing program priorities and budgets for each country’s program(s), to ensure alignment with organizational strategies, priorities and effective implementation;
Research trends in the area of gender equality in education, girls’ education and life skills acquisition and recommend improvements to our programs accordingly;
Work with Girls’ Education program team and Monitoring & Evaluation team to analyze monitoring and evaluation data and recommend improvements to programs and systems accordingly;
Support the launch of the Girls’ Education program in new Room to Read countries;
Provide intensive support to country teams in those regions that lack a Regional Program Manager;
Assist in developing and maintaining program content and guidelines, including a standard version of our Global Resource Guide;
Assist in codifying and documenting best practices from the Girls’ Education program in each country and develop program resources to communicate effectively about the Girls’ Education program with external and internal audiences;
Network with other non-profits running similar programs to find areas of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and strategic partnership;
Represent Room to Read in different forums (internally and externally) to educate about and advocate for our programs with a particular focus on Girls’ Education;
Assist with planning and coordinating trainings, workshops and meetings for the Girls’ Education program teams, which includes developing training materials and workshops;
Work with the Girls’ Education program team and the Development team to develop and write fundraising proposals and maintain strong donor relations;
Travel throughout the year to the countries in which we operate to review program implementation and support in-country teams; and
Other tasks as needed.



Master’s degree required in a related field of study (e.g. MA, MPA, or MSc in International Education, International Relations, or Gender Studies);
A minimum of 8 years of professional experience with a focus on girls’ education in K-12 grade levels in the developing world;
Substantial, relevant working experience in developing countries;
Ability to develop and link program metrics to program outcomes and to articulate and promote strong monitoring and evaluation systems and procedures;
Experience working with youth in a developing country, ideally relating to life-skills trainings and leading workshops (strongly preferred)
Experience in developing and implementing program improvements
Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people;
Ability and desire to travel within the U.S. and internationally approximately 30 percent of time; and
Effectiveness in working in a non-governmental organization that is focused on maintaining high quality work and low overhead
