The Senior Director, Public and Media Relations, will help lead efforts to communicate ICRW’s brand to a wide variety of audiences including: the international development community, private sector, donors and potential donors, related organizations and associations, partners, policymakers, and a general public interested in empowering women and bringing an end to global poverty.
Primary Duties:

The Senior Director is responsible for managing ICRW’s public and media relations efforts across top-tier national and international media outlets to raise awareness of ICRW’s work and mission. The Senior Director's primary responsibility is to promote ICRW through public relations/communication campaigns; earned media relations; marketing initiatives; social media and blogger outreach; and partnership management. The Senior Director will also serve as a spokesperson for ICRW with the media and other external stakeholders such as the Board of Directors (where needed and/or appropriate). The Senior Director will oversee the communications team.

Public/Media Relations:

Conceives and executes press and media relations initiatives, blogger and social media outreach programs, guerrilla marketing concepts, public appearances/events and other media/communications efforts to build awareness of and support for ICRW, as well as support the launch and development of new business opportunities.
Develops and maintains media relationships (nationally and internationally) with the trade press, news wires, broadcast outlets and bloggers.
Identifies news and increases accurate and positive coverage of ICRW.
Goes beyond writing the press release. Conceives and executes interesting, informative PR strategies including events and speaking engagements that reach key influencers in the media, blogosphere and industry.
Researches, writes and distributes a wide variety of media materials, such as op-eds, news releases, fact sheets and web articles.
Serves as the communications liaison to ICRW’s corporate and social responsibility clients.

Social Media:

Grows awareness through contemporary tools: develops relationships with blog influencers, increases awareness of brand and create grassroots buzz/conversations; contributes and executes new ideas for the social media program, improves consumer and media experience; supports other social media efforts as needed.
Maintains day-to-day media monitoring (blogs and mainstream media) such as comment moderation to ensure posts are accurate and develops responses when needed.
Broadens media coverage through building/maintaining relationships with industry bloggers.
Develops key messages and strategies to ensure that these messages are delivered to target audiences.
Conducts media training and provides consultation to develop and prepare select staff members to serve as spokespersons for ICRW.

Team Management and Organizational Collaboration:

Sets objectives for communications that match available financial and staff resources, and monitors and manages staff workload allocations and budgets.
Responsible for engaging his/her team in designing and implementing an overall communications plan to support ICRW’s mission, goals and objectives.
Held accountable for ensuring that collaborative relationships are built and fostered between the communications team and the research portfolios, ensuring integration with program initiatives, projects and services.
Provides mentoring and coaching to the communications staff.
Works closely with the VP of Development, ICRW’s President and the Board of Directors on communication strategies to increase and expand ICRW’s donor base
Reports to and attends executive and board meetings on a periodic basis.
Provides communications support to the Office of the President (ex. Speeches, presentations, memos, etc.)
Performs other responsibilities as directed by the President.

Required Skills:

Masters degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field.
A minimum of twelve (12) years experience as a communications professional, in the areas of media relations, public relations and/or marketing, with a proven ability to cultivate and secure strategic media, and manage a team.
Proven experience serving as a principal spokesperson and working with the media to secure required placements with proven skill in initiating and responding to media inquiries.
Experience in supporting project and account management, including measuring results of strategic plans and programs is required.
Demonstrated track record in developing and implementing short and long-term media, guerrilla marketing and public relations plans, and the ability to work effectively with senior management and partners is also required.
Must possess highly evolved teamwork skills as well as strong time management skills.
Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to develop and communicate a shared vision for communications staff, and guide team members through the achievement of short and long-term communications goals and objectives.
Proven managerial and coaching skills, with the ability to engage and develop staff at various levels of ability.
Proven relationships with existing media contacts and national/global media outlets a must.
Nonprofit or nongovernmental organization and international development experience preferred.
Strong writing, editing, interpersonal, diplomatic and verbal communication skills required.
Computer literacy required including a proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Experience with Adobe software packages (including, Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat) preferred.
