Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women (FLOW) is a new fund that has been set up by the (Dutch) Ministry of Foreign Affairs to improve the position of women and girls. Deadline for proposals/applications: July 29, 2011.

Despite global agreements on the rights, opportunities and safety of women and girls, little progress has been made in this area and gender inequality is still widespread. This is undesirable, both from a humanitarian point of view and from the point of view of countries’ stability and economic health.

Studies show that in recent years funding for organisations working to promote equal rights and opportunities for women and girls has decreased. Yet organisations and initiatives with this goal have a crucial role to play in bringing the objective of gender equality closer. They have a gadfly function, highlighting the inequality and injustice which women confront daily. After all, the sociocultural, economic and political processes of change at issue cannot be imposed on society solely through government efforts, but must be brought about through change within society itself.
