Offer: Reusable Cloth Sanitary Napkins

I am hosting a Cloth Sanitary Napkins making party for teen girls who would be forced to miss school otherwise due to lack of menstrual supplies. I understand there is a need for these in Africa, but I am not limited to that country either.

I am planning the party for early May 2011 and we are hoping to create 300+ pads, which would supply approximately 25 girls with 12 pads each. The pads would be used approximately twice a cycle and would last an average of 10 years if they are cared for properly, which would reduce the need to source new supplies each month.

Cloth sanitary napkins are also known to reduce flow, cramping, and in some cases relieve endometriosis pain, but these are just added bonuses.

If you know of an organization who would distribute these FREE OF CHARGE to girls in need, please contact me.

Kindest regards,
Gloria

Hi Gloria

I am so happy seen your post just now, My organisation have been having concern on women and girls using unhygenic materials for mensuration which is making cervical cancer to be on the increase in Nigeria everyday. We will be glad to supply your Sanitary Napkin to the Teen girls in our villages secondary schools in Nigeria. I will be waiting for your response on the next line of action on this. Thank you.

Hi Busayo

Could you tell me more about your organization? And a little more about what the teen girls who live in your villages have been using?

Thanks Gloria, this is name of my organization, the mission is to help women and girls in our community live a fulfilled lives. The teen girls in the villages because of the level of poverty and inability to have access to sanitary pads use rags mostly for their mensuration. Used cloth that have been discarded. This allows germs to enter into their bodies most of the time and so they will start having one type of vaginal itching or the other. When the itching is not treated on time because of the inability to have access to health care in the villages, it then develop to serious problems like cancer of the cervix.

Do you realize that the Sanitary Napkins I am making are also out of cloth? They would require a thorough washing after each use or the same thing would happen. Is this still acceptable to you?

Yes, I am sure It

Yes, I am sure it won't be from rags, i mean used dirty cloth. We may need to orientate the girls on how to keep it clean but it will be better than using any rags available for their menses.

Great Idea Gloria, family

Great Idea Gloria,

family health trust has been involved in distributing these sanitary pads to the girls in schools. it was a changes air sponsored program, which was sponsored from the US, unfortunately it phased out, but it helped alot. It was a lovely program because it included school fees for the orphans and vulnerable children and with the payment we gave them the pads.
The kit included 2 pants and 1 bar of soap as well. So if you can manage to throw in those, it would be a good idea too. I wanted them too but my sisters in Nigeria or Kenya can have them since they are few.

Best regards in this.

Hi Sharon

What a wonderful idea to include pants and soap with the cloth sanitary napkins.Thank you for your great suggestion. Is it safe to assume that the women would be small in stature and would require a small size pant?

Sharo's picture

I think it is safe to assume

I think it is safe to assume that they women would be small because it will go mostly to those in secondary school, but you can include medium sizes as well.

Sharon. I think you should check out this website. Perhaps you can contact them to see if they could continue the program that was phased out by the other organization

Hello Gloria,

I have a suggestion. If it is possible you could make a simple tutorial about how to make a cloth sanitary napkin and post it here. You can do it with illustrations and text. You can create a video to go with it as well. In my opinion a lot more women will get benfited. Cloth is not such a rare commodity and if women can make their own all the nore better. Plus they can teach others as well. It can spread that way.

Sanitary Napkins

Hi again all,

The sanitary napkins I am making this time around will go to Dwelling Places in Uganda. I have a personal connection that will be taking them back to Uganda with her and giving them to Dwelling Places to distribute.

If I end up making more, I will be sure to think of you all.

This is a great solution

I am excited to read about these efforts. SHIP project has found the inavailability of sanitary pads to girls a major cause for school abseentism and drop out in Rukungiri district. I will be glad to share more with you.

I am TV Producer who happens to meet a number of talented yet challenged girls. My friends and I have been donating pads to the girls, and right now the need is so overwhelming. I would like to know how you can help.

I look forward to hearing from you.
