Need: ‘WOMEN ONLY’ CYBERCAFES IN NIGERIA

I am Busayo Obisakin, One of the graduates of 2009 VOICE OF OUR FUTURE CORRESPONDENTS AND THE WINNER OF THE SCHOLARSHIP TO EMPOWERMENT INSTITUTE, NY, USA. I am currently the Founder and Executive Director of Women Inspiration Development center, An NGO based in Ile-ife, Nigeria. Please help me realize my dream of having a WOMEN ONLY CYBERCAFE in my community.
THE NEED FOR ‘WOMEN ONLY’ CYBERCAFES IN NIGERIA

It is a known fact that the development of Africa and Nigeria inclusive depends on given the women a say and participation in the leadership of their communities. If women lack information, innovations and economic power, there is little or nothing they can do their oppression will continue and underdevelopment will continue to plague their nations. But when they have access to happenings around the world through web 2.0 and how to go about innovations in their communities, this will help them in taking positive actions to be able to stand on their feet economically and enable them to stand up and challenge the power pulling them down from contributing their own quota to the development of their communities and their nations as a whole.
Therefore there is an urgent need for cybercafé for ‘women only’ in Nigeria. The few cybercafé around are already taking over by the “yahoo boys” these are the boys who spam on the internet. They can be so unruly and dangerous and so women don’t feel safe visiting those cybercafé for fear of being attacked or molested. I got to know about web 2.0 in 2009. Even though I was already educated with master’s degree, yet I was ignorant of anything related to computer. It was because of this fact that the vision I have been carrying about for so many years, I was not able to realize it until that year. I decided to buy a laptop on credit and got a loan from the bank to get my office connected. I then decided to search for women organizations all over the world from Google where I could have knowledge about what they are doing so that I would know how to carry out my vision of many years for the women in my community. I came across World Pulse and I went into the Voice of Our Future Correspondent Program. 500 women put in all over the world, at first 30 of us were picked to continue the training for four months. It was after the program that I emerged as the candidate given the Scholarship to come to USA for an Empowerment Training program. I was exposed to web 2'0 through the program where I learnt so many things and was able to gathered many experiences from other women from many other countries all over the world on empowering women in their communities. After VOF program, I was able to register my own NGO which is Women Inspiration Development Center through the contributions from the Board members of the World Pulse. And for a year, I have been able to have workshop and talks with over 200 women in my community on creating their lives the way they want it, exploring their potentials and making use of it maximally. The vision I have been carrying about for 20 years becomes a reality after a year of connecting to the world through internet. This will help you to understand why I felt that we need "women only" cybercafé in my community as a matter of urgency. As educated as many of our women is 90% are still ignorant of the happening in the world through the internet.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

-Training women on how to access the internet, opening email address, how to chat on internet, skype call and some other programs that would help them to connect with the outside world on internet.

-Providing a safe place for women to have access to internet without fear of attack or being molested by anybody.
- Helping women to be well informed on happenings around the world through access to the internet at half price to what operate outside.

-Helping women to raise their voices on issues that concern them and mount pressure on government or any quarter where the rights of women are being trampled on through the internet.

PROJECT GOALS

Phase 1

The activities of the cybercafé could take off with 10 Desk Tops and 10 internet modems. We will be targeting 100 women yearly mainly from Osun State towns and villages for a period of 2 years. These women would be exposed to the workshops and trainings on WEB2.0 in the center. The trainings will be every 2 months of each year with 20 women each two months. Osun state has 5 zones which means 20 women and girls from each zone yearly and totally 40 women and girls from each zone for the 2 years.
These programs would be designed to include an evaluation process which allows examination and assessments of the impacts of the programs on the women’s quality of life and capacity to create a better life for themselves and their families.

Phase 2
It is expected that the cybercafé would be sustaining itself after the first two years with the women form the community coming in to patronize the café. Women and Girls in the community will be encouraged through local advertisement to patronize the café with half the price of what is operating outside and since it will be first of its kind and what the women have been looking for, it will not be difficult for the café to sustain itself.

Phase 3
After 5 years of using the cybercafé in Ile-ife community, it is expected that the café will be moving to open other branches of the café into other part of Nigeria until it is in every state of the Nation since this is the need of every woman in Nigeria.

EXPECTED OUTCOME

We expect to see improvements in the following areas in the lives of these women as they were involved in the activities of the center:-
-Increased hope and vision for the future
-Women becoming more conscious of their right
-Women making more contributions in their community.
-decrease in the rate of girls wondering about in the community
-The voices of the women becoming louder in their community.
- Some behavioral changes in relation to their quality of life.

Thanks!

Thanks for this... I am curious to know how you intend to conduct monitoring and evaluation for this project to ensure that your objectives are being met. This will be very crucial and will inform future steps for the programme. Perhaps I could also suggest that the age groups for your trainings be somewhat narrowed down. A group of women 18-35 years in age is very broad. While they may learn the basics of ICT etc, an 18-year-old girl might not feel safe enough to fully express her thoughts and emotions in the presence of a 35-year-old woman who she encounters daily in her community. I would feel that 18-25 is a better split. And then 26-40 and 41-55 might be work better, although that would mean more work! But I think it's well worth a think!

Otherwise, I really like this idea! Very inspiring!

from today i live out of my imagination
i am more than my yesterday
tomorrow i plant a new seed
nothing that lies behind easy
nothing that is ahead real
my within is all i have today
