Offer: Summer Training: Media, Democracy and the Economy

CPE’s Summer Institute (July 24-30, 2011) is a week-long intensive training in economics for media makers, activists, educators, and anyone who wants a better understanding of economics. CPE focuses on how economic systems impact our lives and work every day. The trainings are highly participatory and build on the knowledge and experience of the participants. No background in economics is required. Deadline for applications: April 15, 2011.

Core Classrooms: At the heart of the Summer Institute program are two core courses, one on the U.S. Economy, one on the International Economy. All participants must choose one core course. The core classes meet each day in the mornings.

Special Track: Media, Democracy and the Economy

Each year, CPE chooses an issue area that they focus on in the workshops and panels as well as in the core classrooms. This year's special track will look at:

* What it means that our media is becoming increasingly controlled by corporate interests?
* What it means for the press to be so dependent on advertisers to keep them afloat?
* What its means for our democracy that news and analysis critical to its functioning is often overshadowed by the battle for corporate profits.

Fees: The fee for tuition, classroom materials and room and board is $900. There are a limited number of scholarships and CPE does their best to make sure that the cost does not prevent people from coming. A payment plan is an option. Please note that our scholarships do not cover transportation costs.

C. Edwin Baker Fellowships: CPE is delighted to be able to offer twelve C. Edwin Baker Fellowships to support the participation of media activists and media makers in our 2011 Summer Institute. The Fellowship covers transportation (from within the U.S.) to the Summer Institute as well as room, board and tuition. Fellows are expected to produce a media piece (article, radio show, video, etc.), with support from CPE staff economists, that draws on the content of the Summer Institute. Deadline for application is April 15.

Application Forms:Here are links to the application forms. You can download the form, fill it out and send it back by email to programs@populareconomics.org or mail to CPE, PO Box 785, Amherst, MA 01004.
