Need: Please help put a smile on the face of a young woman

To whom it may concern

My name is Laura Golakeh I am 20 years old, from Liberian and have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. I was born in the 90s during the civil unrest in Liberia, not knowing I would still feel the hurts of conflict in my early teens when I saw friends and loved ones die from hunger and bullets. Who would wish for such? I grew up in a society where the sounds of bullets replaced the sound of music, where poverty was accepted as a norm, where mothers looked helplessly at hungry babies and where fathers were hardly heard saying “I am off to work”.

My childhood was robbed. Because of this I vowed to ensure my country and the continent of Africa don’t go back to those dark days. This has influenced my vision for the future, to live in a society where all women have a voice and are safe and free, free from poverty, illiteracy, cancer, HIV/AIDS and discrimination. Advocating for women’s right is my passion and now I spend my days working for young women like me who never had the opportunity I have now making sure these women and their children will not suffer similar fate. I am also interested in the environment because women are the forgotten gender in the fight against global warming and other environmental issues.

My vision has led me to the One Young World Community where I have been selected as an outstanding candidate to represent the hopes and aspirations of millions of women in Africa. One Young World is a global forum for young people of leadership caliber. It manifests the reality of common humanity and the shared existence of all peoples in the world. Its purpose is to connect and bring together the youngest and brightest and to ensure that their concerns, opinions and solutions are heard and taken into account by that in power, whether in government, business or any other sector. Since it’s inaugural summit in 2009, One Young World has hosted influential people like Kofi Anan, Desmond Tutu and Jennifer Corriero to name a few. This year’s summit will be held in Zurich, Switzerland. (www.oneyoungworld.org)

I believe this summit will expose me to happenings around the world and I will be able to share my experience with other young people and learn from them as well and have my say on issues affecting young people around the world. I will learn a lot from this conference and it will enable me impact the lives of young women directly. As the media will also be discussed I feel this will enhance skills I also possess as a producer and speaker on radio talk shows and as a journalist writing about issues affecting women.

WHAT BETTER FEELING YOU CAN HAVE THEN KNOWING IT WAS BECAUSE OF YOU THAT A FORGOTTEN ILLITERATE, TEENAGE MOTHER OF TWO IN A REMOTE VILLAGE IN AFRICA MIGHT STILL HAVE A FUTURE BECAUSE YOU SUPPORTED A WOMEN’S RIGHTS ADVOCATE.

I am hoping to raise 3,000 Euros and if you want to make a donation please email me at lauragolakeh90@yahoo.com for enquiries. Donations can be made to me through western union or money gram as it is the only and best means of receiving money in my part of the world.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
LAURA GOLAKEH
