Need: Sponsorship to attend the UN 55th Session on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York (22 Feb-04 March, 2011)

I am sending this time sensitive letter of request for sponsorship to enable me to participate in the 55th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA from February 22nd 2011 to March 4th 2011. CSW is a commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) dedicated to gender equality and the advancement of women.

I was selected among twenty-five outstanding young African women leaders as a 2010 MILEAD Fellow. The MILEAD Fellows Program is designed to identify Africa’s most promising women leaders and to build their skills, strengthen networks and support them to attain and succeed in leadership positions. As part of our year-long training, we participated in a three-week intensive residential training at the University of Ghana from July 12- August 03 2010. As part of efforts to expose us to critical national and international processes, we are invited to participate and speak at next year’s CSW in New York.

The theme for the year’s CSW event: Access and Participation of women and girls to education training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to fully employment and decent work. As young African women, we are committed to the equality and equity of women’s involvement in all spheres. As part of our participation, Moremi Initiative will be co-hosting a session titled - “Gaining Momentum: Equity and Equality in Young Women’s Participation in Africa’s Development”. I am scheduled to speak on this panel with my other colleagues during the event. This session will allow for conversation on the inclusion and active involvement of young African women in Africa’s progress and also showcase the work of the fellows in the advancement of equality and the rights of women and girls in our communities.

Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership is a non-for-profit organization established in 2004 in response to the gross under-representation of African women in leadership positions in Africa. It is based in Ghana and United States and works throughout Africa to engage, equip, and inspire the next generation of African women leaders. It is the firm belief of Moremi Initiative that the full and active participation of women in leadership is a pre-requisite for positive change and development in Africa.

To facilitate my attendance at this event, I fervently hope that my request for sponsorship will meet with a positive response from you. I strongly believe that my participation in this important session will broaden my knowledge and network as an emerging leader. I commit to submit a report to you about my experience, contribution and impact upon my return from New York.

Please feel free to contact me for any additional information at the above address. You can also contact Moremi Initiative directly for any additional information: Email: info@moremiinitiative.org or telephone: +1 404 812 8252.

I thank you in advance for your investment in my leadership development.

Hi,

Congrats for being selected. As Jade mentioned, global fund for women is a good place to apply and it has to be applied at least eight weeks prior to the event so good luck. You can also try Open Society Foundation at http://www.soros.org as they also had travelling funds for women.

Thank you so much!

Thank you so much; I'm so overwhelmed by the warm wishes, kind thoughts and the immense support I have been receiving from women I consider to be sisters, mothers, aunts and peers from all over the world.
Perhaps the greatest miracle of the modern day African woman is being able to join a community of women all over the globe and find that they have managed to defy the limitations placed by geography, resources and circumstance to forge and find new friendships, new people to call family and new comrades in the goal to elevate the status of women all over the world.

I am grateful and humbled that I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn, to be able to interact with anyone I please, because where I come from - there are so many who will never get that chance.

And yes; I am believing God for the miracle.

warm regards!

sending positive vibes to you sister!

Dear Delta,

I hope your search for travel funding is fruitful. Please let me know when you have confirmed your travel plans, as World Pulse will have a small delegation participating in a parallel event on Mar. 3 at CSW and we would love for you to attend. One of our Voices of Our Future correspondents who lives in the area will also likely be covering the event as a reporter, so it would be great for you to meet up!

Warmth and light,
Jade
