A Journey Of A Lifetime

Everyday homeless youth face obstacles that most of us cannot fathom. Where will I get my next meal? When can I shower? Where will I sleep tonight? StandUp For Kids, a nationally recognized organization that actively reaches out to homeless youth, is collaborating with Segway Off the Streets (SOS Tour 2009), a campaign led by Mike Taylor to increase awareness and raise money for homeless youth.

Mike Taylor will set off on a Segway, a small electric vehicle, on August 2, 2009 from Rochester, MN and travel 2,500 miles at 12 miles per hour to his final destination, Atlanta, GA where the National Headquarters of StandUp For Kids is located. This very long journey, at a very slow pace, will take him nearly two months but for a very worthy cause.

"Yes, this is the reason," said Taylor of his upcoming journey, "The StandUp For Kids organization consists of nearly ALL volunteers. The budget is small and the organization relies on the generosity of people in this country who StandUp and say, enough!" Taylor continues, "But there are so many people throughout this country who remain unaware of the more than 1.3 million homeless youth. And so, this makes the strange trip worthy. Riding this little machine for 2,500 miles seems a strange enough thing to do that people will take notice and say--what's that all about. And we want to tell them. We know that if they know, they'll help--because how can you not? Our kids are on our streets when they should have a HOME!"

Speeding along on a Segway will surely grab the attention of motorists, pedestrians, perhaps even trains, planes, and the Goodyear blimp. Even though the economy is suffering, summer still means kids out of school, vacations, and thus, travel. Taylor racing down the road on his Segway while being trailed by a large RV is bound to attract some attention. As Taylor stated above, "We know that if they know, they'll help – because how can you not?"

Ride-A-Long:
If one Segway rider can attract a little attention, imagine if there were twenty Segway riders speeding along together! The SOS Tour and StandUp For Kids have partnered with Segway Tour Companies so you can StandUp and Ride-A-Long with Mike.

Participants can ride their own or rented Segway and are asked to raise a minimum of $100 or make a $100 donation.

Taste of Segway:
Try it out! Join us at your city's event site for a Taste of Segway where you can take a Segway for a short spin and for the adventurous, try the "Super Segway Obstacle Course!" Yes, it's true, we will setup an obstacle course to see how good you really are at maneuvering the Segway. Participants are asked to make a $5 minimum donation to experience the Taste of Segway. These small gifts add up and help us, help kids!
