The Women in Development/Gender and Development Committee (WID/GAD) of Peace Corps volunteers in Costa Rica are proud to announce the 3rd annual Voces Valerosas Conference in San Jose Costa Rica on March 11th 2011 to coincide with International Women's Day. The Voces Valerosas Conference is the end result of a series of 9 workshops for young women all over Costa Rica. The workshops focus on topics like self esteem, sex ed, domestic violence, human rights, and economic justice. At the end of each dynamic workshop the girls complete a creative arts homework assignment. The assignments include poetry, short stories, drawings, collages, etc. which are then judged by a panel of Costa Rican professional women. The women judges represent such organizations as the University of Costa Rica, the Legislative Assembly and INAMU. These judges then send their list of winners to the WID/GAD committee and we compile the work of these winners into a magazine. The winners are invited along with their mothers to attend the all day conference in San Jose. The conference has proved in years past to be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, especially for the young women traveling to San Jose, most for the first time, who have the opportunity to walk across a stage and receive a copy of a magazine in which they are featured.

The theme of this year's conference is Empowerment and the WID/GAD committee is currently working hard to plan the conference. We are looking for strong women to sit on a panel to talk about their life experience and to share words of wisdom with the young girls.
