Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Madrid (España)
3 - 9 July, 2008

For the first time, a Spanish university, the Complutense University of Madrid, will be the venue for the 10th Mundos de Mujeres/Women´s Worlds Congress. This is an international and interdisciplinary event of great importance and our university community is very proud to be the host. From the moment this University was commissioned with the task of preparing this Congress, a considerable number of people have been working on its organization with the backing of the entire community. Drawing attention to gender inequality has been one of the core commitments of the current Chancellor's Office ever since it was set up in 2003. This commitment has been accompanied by additional activities such as the multiple teaching and research initiatives already established for this purpose by the University, one of the leading universities in Spain with regard to gender issues.

First of all, I wish to extend my most sincere thanks and appreciation to the Congress Honorary Committee, presided by Her Majesty the Queen of Spain Doña Sofía, and integrated by the President of the Spanish Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Vice-President, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega Sanz and a great majority of the Ministers of the Spanish Government; the President of the Courts of Justice, María Emilia Casas Baamonde; the President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre Gil de Biedma; the Major of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón Jiménez, and other prominent members of the Spanish Government and international politics. Likewise, representatives of the most important institutions of the Spanish State, the governing bodies of the Autonomous Communities and local city councils, organisations specifically dedicated to issues concerning gender equality, women's social movements, representatives from the world of the university, intellectual, scientific and cultural organizations, and many others –all have offered to be part of the Congress Honorary and Advisory Committees. We extend our gratitude and appreciation.

The Scientific Committee, which oversees thirteen areas of interest, has been enriched with the participation of people held in the highest intellectual esteem who have combined the academic rigour of their work with bringing the burning issues concerning equal rights and opportunities for women to the fore. We are especially grateful to the people of our University who, over these last three years, have put so much effort into the planning and management of the Congress in its different phases. They have not only worked with great skill and efficiency, but have shown throughout their desire to contribute towards making a world that is more just for women.

This 10th Mundos de Mujeres/Women's Worlds 2008 Congresshas been madepossible by the contributions of many other institutions, both public and private, which have given their generous support as collaborators or sponsors. To all of them, we extend our most sincere thanks and appreciation.

I wish to invite everyone taking part in Mundos de Mujeres/Women's Worlds 2008 to use this Congress as an opportunity to debate freely and passionately and reflect on the many problems that stand in the way of rights and opportunities for women. I trust that a great gathering such as this will contribute towards bringing this long yearned-for equality that bit nearer. On behalf of the ComplutenseUniversity, welcome, everyone, to the 10th Mundos de Mujeres/Women´s Worlds Congress.
