World Habitat Day-(globally)
Communities around the world celebrate World Habitat Day on the First Monday of October each year, and this year's theme is 'Planning our urban future'
Key issues run into my head as I reflect on this theme.
i) are urban planners cognisant of the challenges that women, youths and children face in the urban communities ,in the face of HIV & AIDS ,environmental degradation, lack of basic services, rising unemployment, crime, not forgetting an ever increase in sexual and physical abuse that women and children face each day?
ii) how much support is the international community going to give to urban planners in the Global South to ensure that the plans that are presented are well financed to suit the ever changing environment?
With my brief interaction with a few urban planners in my home country, I have learnt a lot around urban planning and how it is important for urban planners to be constantly networking with civil society and other agencies working in the local government , so as to bring positive change in the community
This year' theme also challenges sub regional and continental Urban Planners associations in Africa to critically assess their role in the ever changing world and how they can continue to be active in the socio-economic development of our cities which really need to be rescuscitated !
Happy World Habitat Day!
