Dedicated to my mother

Nepalese all around the country and abroad celebrated Mother's Day on Saturday, April 25.This day is also known as Mata Tirtha Aunsi because it falls on the last day of the dark moon fortnight of the month of Baisakh in the Hindu calendar.

People of all ages celebrate the entire day with their mothers and present them with sweets and other delicacies, new clothes and gifts of all kinds as a show of respect and love in return for their invaluable contributions in their lives.Sons and daughters living far off or separately also pay visits to their mothers. They on the day see at the face of their mothers and gift them sweets, clothes and her other favorites.

Meanwhile, those who do not have their mothers perform puja and give presents in their mother's name. Many such people visit the holy site of Mata Tirtha in the capital on this day and take holy bath in the pond there. There is also another pond in Mata Tirtha where it is believed one can see his or her mother's face upon the pond's water. It is a popular belief that a visit to the site will please the mother's departed soul.

My mother lives in Birgunj. I could not visit her yesterday. Unlike other Nepalese, we do not celebrate anything like this. I belong to a slightly different culture, but this does not mean that i cannot celebrate it. I wanted to let mom know how special she is to me. Today, i want to post something i had written 3 years back. This is the speech i had given in an award ceremony where i was presented with the award of "Top 10 College Women" from all over Nepal. I wanted to share it with the WorldPulse family to give a little glimpse of the strength that my mother possesses and how she inspires me.

"After god made Adam, he improved humankind by making Eve…….

I believe that a woman is a blend of love, affection, care, and power. I feel special to be born as a woman because as a little girl, I got to wear all colorful dresses and look no less than Cinderella, and Barbie doll. I feel special to be born as a woman because my one smile can make my daddy's day and a simple hug I give to my brother can boost up his spirits.

I feel special to be born as a woman because of the female bonding I share with my girlfriends. There are not many men I can sit and have a conversation about a shade of green, a green which is not quite like the green of a leaf or even that of an emerald, but close to a patch of blue, a blue not quite like the blue of water but perhaps closer to the sky.

More than anything else, I feel special to be born as a woman because of the courage we possess….Today when I am 21, I wonder that my mom was my age when she started cooking breakfast and prepare lunch bags for me, my sisters, and my little brother. Whatever my mom taught me, she taught me by example and she started it when she was my age.

My mom was never depressed not desperate because she always knew that if one gives his/her best whatever comes will be for the best. It is this belief in my mom that she survived the Uterus cancer that gripped her a decade back. The whole family was in a state of catastrophe. Back then I did not know what a cancer is…all I knew was it would take away my mom from me. The hope of her survival was lost. The doctors lost it, my father lost it, we, her children lost it. But there was one person who had the belief that ultimately, everything would be fine and that person was my mom. It is this spirit of my mom that she survived the terminal cancer although the medical field had no answer for it.

I share this story with you because it makes me feel proud of my mom….because it makes me feel special to be born as a woman. Love you ma….

If there is any truth in rebirth I would like to be born as a woman in each of my life because women can gather strength when others feel that there is not enough strength left.

Thank You"

Hi Jackie

Thank you for your words....when i look back to my childhood, this one memory always crosses my mind....When people say that women are the weaker species, i think of my mom and all other women around the world who stand firm despite adversities....and i feel wonderful to know that women are infact stronger....

You yourself are the testimony....I am truly inspired by you!

Lots of love

Khushbu, what a wonderful

Khushbu, what a wonderful tribute to a wonderful woman. Thank you for sharing this with us, and for sharing the tradition of Mata Tirtha Aunsi with us, as well. In the United States, we celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. This year it falls on May 10, and women throughout the country will be honoring their mothers.

I am especially touched by this paragraph below:

"Meanwhile, those who do not have their mothers perform puja and give presents in their mother's name. Many such people visit the holy site of Mata Tirtha in the capital on this day and take holy bath in the pond there. There is also another pond in Mata Tirtha where it is believed one can see his or her mother's face upon the pond's water. It is a popular belief that a visit to the site will please the mother's departed soul."

My mother passed away suddenly when I was 18, and Mothers day is always a hard one because we do not have many traditions to honor those who have passed on. This year I will be looking for ways to pay tribute to my mom, and your description above is a wonderful source of inspiration. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us all.

Your mother must be proud of you

I am really sorry about your mother. I can imagine how difficult it must have been for you but look at you...you have lived with this truth so strongly...I salute your spirit...

I am so glad i could share this story with you. Its amazing how one culture could be a source of inspiration for others. We take these things so casually and see, this made so much of a difference to you..I am sure your mom, wherever she is, stays with you always, and she will be especially closer to you on May 10...

Be the strong person that you are.....

May your mother's soul rest in peace!

God bless all

Dear Khushbu,
First of all congratulaton for next step of World pulse. Its a great opportunities for you, Anjana and me. We are selected from Nepal. Great post. It was my first time I was far in mother day. I miss her but this mother day give me a spirit to be more strong. I talked with my mother on the phone. You are lucky, you were with your mother. Our individual mother is happy to have a daughter like us but what's our common mother. What's going on in Nepal? It makes me fraustrade to hear about political crisis. As you are in Nepal and is aware about the situation can you please write something about it.

Another things, Did Anjana talk with you about the meeting? I didn't hear anythings from you so I am asking these question. For more details please talk with Anjana as I came to know that you are close friend. Waiting for your reply.
