VOF Week 4 : (A Cyber diva’s passion explained)

I like cyberspace. My vision is to end up working in online spaces by managing and creating content. As a mother, cyber space enables me to do my work at home. I create content offline on my laptop and connect the mobile phone to my laptop for internet. I usually copy my blog post to a flash drive and with connection from an internet café blog because blogging needs good internet connection which I do not get from a mobile phone.

I would really like to find an opportunity where I can be out in my community collecting relevant information which in turn will need to package for a news outlet. I would really like to have a community whose views are documented. This helps in shaping my life and other community members. My community believes in the power of the media and it would be nice if they contribute their voice. I personally would like to publish the voice of the voiceless as some do not even know how to read and write. It would be nice to learn and share what is happening in other places.

Being a Correspondent will help me achieve my vision of working in cyber space. Creating content for online spaces is already my passion and I have been blogging since 2004. I have also been writing for other online spaces like genderit.org a project for the Association for Progressive Communications (APC).

Following the Financial Global Crisis that hit the USA, I lost my strings and lost my opportunity to document the voice of my community on gender and technology issues. I am therefore looking for other opportunities where I can apart from creating content also make a living.

Apart from being based in Zambia I am part of many networks and I therefore travel a lot both locally and regionally. Being your Correspondent will help to be put on the world map as the online space is accessed by everyone. I would like to be a Correspondent for World Pulse because it is an opportunity for me to be published and inform and educate others on what is happening in my community. World Pulse will also put me on the map and publicise me. I have seen that World Pulse have previously aggregated my stories and used them which shows that they have been interested in what I write especially at the World Social Forum events.

I believe that being a Correspondent for World Pulse will make me achieve my vision in life as this platform will also popularize my work and add to my curriculum vitae. It will also empower me by continuous online learning and by giving me an opportunity to create content. I would also like to be part of women of the world who would be writing for a just cause.

VOF Week 4 Assignment

Greetings,

I had the pleasure of reading your final essay for Voices of the Future. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and explaining how important writing is in your life and the lives of those around you. You have a clear dedication and experience, having blogged since 2004!

I am wondering, what are some of the issues that you think your community needs a voice for? What issues would you like to represent?

This is a good reminder that journalists do not live in a vacuum, that we need funding and technology that will enable us to spread our messages. I am sorry to hear that the impact of the financial crisis has impacted you so much and I hope that some new doors are opened soon!

with kindness,
carly diaz

issues that affect my community

Dear All,

Issues that affect my community include education, governance, gender, politics, social, environmental issues and information communication technology and energy.

My community is an under privileged community whose views need to be published. Many women in my community are also looking for information on how they can empower themselves in their livelihoods.
While many are house wives there is need for skills and microfinance opportunities that should be shared so that they learn from what other people are doing.
