Introducing myself and my journal: Surviving stigma

About Me:
It is March, 2006. I have been in high school for a week. I am wallowing in homesickness and general discomfort from being in a new environment; around new people; governed by new rules; and, no mommy to run to. It is Saturday. I am bored out of my skin. I make my way to the Computer Laboratory. I have been learning computer literacy for a week.

Now I need to get a few things out of the way. Before I joined high school, I had neither seen nor had an encounter with a computer. Here we are now, in this magical place popularly known as the 'comp-lab'. There are many shiny screens, and, a lot of wiring. So much wiring. I settle down in the lab and go about switching one of the PCs on. I am a fast learner. I have got all that in the bag. After an hour of reminding myself everything we learnt last week, I stumble upon 'Internet Explorer'. Explore did you say? I definitely want to explore. I want to explore everything and learn as much as I can about the internet. I open 'Internet Explorer' but, of course, this is not my day- 'a connection cannot be established'. I call on the laboratory technician to help me. He presses a few buttons, mumbles a few words and then, standing up, declares, "It must be the settings."

My name is Vivian Ntinyari. It is almost a decade since I had this first encounter with the internet. Not exactly the best prelude; but, I couldn't be more thankful. My interest in the internet has grown by leaps and bounds since. I have had the opportunity to engage with a network of people who have become life long friends, a mentor, and employers for me. I am now in university, chasing after a bachelor's degree in laws. Besides, I work as a social media manager for an organization called Plus Fabulosity. Plus Fabulosity is an empowerment organization that concentrates its efforts on making life easier and more bearable for plus-sized girls in Kenya. I got into the firm as a web-content generator.

My Passions:
Breast cancer awareness, information technology, community development, law and security.

My Challenges:
Time constraints and financial constraints.

My Vision for the Future:
To be part of a global internet focused breast cancer awareness campaign.

My Areas of Expertise:
Social Media Management, content generation, legal aid

Welcome to World Pulse,

Welcome to World Pulse, Vivian, where we love to "hear" the adventures of others through the use of journaling. Your visions are one step closer to achievement when you network in such a strong group of empowered people. You are only one woman, but you are smart enough to know that our power is exponential when combined with other powerful people.

I love the anonymity of initial internet acquaintance, where nobody has to know gender, size, color, or anything other than what we think, as people.

You are now a part of a thriving grassroots network of women leaders and supporters from more than 190 countries. See the Getting Started Guide to learn more about networking in our community: http://worldpulse.com/pulsewire/about/guide

I look forward to hearing more of your voice in WorldPulse.

Continue to be a blessing.
