Interview with Youth Noise - Play City

Recently, Marisa McGilliard and I were interviewed by Youth Noise's Play City Blog staff. In the interview we discussed plans for our "Starting With Sports" photo documentary, and our thoughts on using sport as a tool for the empowerment of women throughout the world. Please check out the blog at:

Great interview

Kirsten,

I got a very good feel for what you are doing from this article. I have all these questions about how your photo documentary will develop? How will you travel? Who will be the photographer? How do you know how to do all this?
I'm excited just thinking about it all! I am mulling through folks I know- who could help fund this project. I will keep Starting with Sports in my mind. I believe when we all put the thoughts and energy into the world, these things come to fruition. So cool that you are doing it- it must be so motivating and thrilling. I'll keep thinking and reading your story.

Thanks for posting it here.

Cheers.

Thank you for your comment!

Laura,

We appreciate your enthusiasm for the potential of "Starting with Sports." We are quite excited about the project as well! The possibilities inherent in bringing together some of the greatest development minds and the greatest sports for change innovators are infinite, and we really hope to create a credible, effective, and welcoming tool for all who wish to get involved.

We are still ironing out the details for the documentary, and are working through the book's architecture as we speak. Stylistically, our photo documentary will be tailored for a young, urban audience and thus will be fueled by minimal but crucial copy, and will unfold much like a call to action - innovative. Of late, we have begun looking into the potential for using the format of web books to make a more dynamic and expanded representation of the print copy.

Both Marisa and I are quite conscious, and thus self-conscious, about our personal impact on our surroundings while we travel. We are playing with ideas of how best to be responsible travelers from an ecological perspective, and a cultural perspective. We are looking to keep our internal operation small (just myself, Marisa, and our camera man), and rely on the capacity of connections we build within each country.

How do we know how to do this? Well, you know, I would say that the exact "this" is something neither Marisa nor I have done before. I guess you could say that is it the perfect partnership. Neither of us would be qualified alone, it is only together that we can leverage the potential of this project. Like building a high performing team, it takes all kinds.

Please do stay abreast of our progress, and we would certainly welcome any ideas you have about funding opportunities.

Asante Sana.

Shelter and Peace for all,
Kirstin
