DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN

My name is Bitondo Bulambo Betty; I am a single woman aged 19 years old, with a young son called Moîse. I received this child as a result of rape.

I find it shocking to see how women still continue to suffer day after day – I don’t know if we women have become animals or what!

Here in the DRC, especially in the Congo, sexual violence has become a game. There are men aged 30 who rape a 12 year old girl. Even in the village there are armed soldiers who come with their arms and intimidate us and finally rape the women, and when they are done they put their weapons into the women’s vaginas. There are others who take sand and put it inside. We women really are discriminated against, abused, etc. …

There are military men who take little girls aged 12 into their house and use them as sex slaves every day, saying, “if you say anything I’ll kill you”. We women are humiliated nowadays. Most women have a child whose father they don’t know; and when you look at that child your eyes well up with tears. Please, we need integrated protection of women and young girls, and we need to recognise issues of gender and women’s rights.

Thank you.
