Music is the rhythm of the soul...

lake_eola.jpg

I recently took a short trip to Florida to defrost a bit after a long (and still dragging) Wisconsin winter. While there, I savored every scent, site and sound... wafts of orange blossoms, rustling palm trees, rhythmic ocean waves and transcendent sunsets. On my last night there, I was invited to a show at a locals hangout. I love going to see live bands. The group was made up of 4 or 5 old guys who could really jam. But then, in the second set, a young woman goes up and joins them. She barely looks up at the crowd, grabs the microphone and begins to sing. My jaw drops. It was as if her entire body was taken over by Song itself. She sang with power, grace and force. Her voice climbed octaves more quickly than a flute. Her rich lows made my heart rumble in my chest. I've heard many beautiful singing voices - but never anything so raw.

A week later, I had a dream. This time, the Song spirit came over me. I sang, and I sang. I sang deep from the soul and I felt completely free - as if I had no body, but only soul. I woke up knowing such a vivid and powerful dream was a message.

This is the message: I must gather songs from everywhere for our "I Am Not Cut" video project. In every country there are incredible singers and musicians that capture the spirit of freedom in their song. I just need to ask for them. So I am asking you now. If anyone reading this knows of a singer or songs that are uplifting and empowering to women, please, please, please send me their names - and if you have it, I'd love an mp3! You can even record yourselves and send it along.

Thank you for allowing me to share,

Peace & Love,

~Lili

Music is my life!

Dear Lili,

Really impressive article!
I saw many girls singing life and being totally into the song!
It is so natural! What about your song spirit? Do the words and melody come along as you sing or you just sing already known ones...

I love music and cannot live without it!!!
Your idea is great!
What you gonna do after you have all the songs gathered?

Spirit of Song

When I was singing in my dream, there were no words... my voice became an instrument to create the most beautiful sounds! It was a lovely dream to have.

I'm gathering music for a video I'm working on with some friends. We are all activists for women's health and equality. We are trying to combat the custom of cutting girls' genitals. They do this in many cultures of Africa to ensure women stay "pure" or clean and because some believe it will make them more docile. What we want to do is show the women from these cultures that this does not have to happen by giving them examples of women FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD who are not cut. So the movie will be very simple. It will just be woman after woman saying "I am not cut". Would you like to send us a video??? Or maybe music??? We are looking for music to put in the background of the clips. Let me know if you have any song or singer in mind that might work for this. Like I said, the idea is to use music that you can feel, that is powerful, and up-lifting to women.

Thank you again for your comment.

"I am not cut"

Dear Lili,

this is a great project, at the same time I am even scared to the idea that such things do happen!
How much yet we don't know! Indeed - music can bring a strong message! Can I see a sample of you video, would make me understand better you approach.

And what if you do it?
Who will be able to see it?
The poor girls that have to go through it?
What outcome do you expect?

Just looked for more info on this issue, actually hearing about it for the first time.
"International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation" February 6.

Looking forward to hearing more of it...
Good luck!
