The Media and the Internet, Irreversible Advocacy Tools

The violence and abuse that women in my country of the Democratic Republic of Congo face in general, and especially in rural areas, remain unknown. Women and girls in rural areas do not have access to computers and the internet. There is no collaboration among media, women and girls. In other words, there are no systems of communication among the two. When women and girls are not connected to the world, this reinforces their ignorance. The partnership between media and women must be reinforced and developed in rural areas. The combination of advocacy activities at a local, national, sub-regional, regional and international level, along with permanent awareness-raising activities for women around the world, will have a strong impact on decision-makers, which will thus have a positive effect far beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo. Informing decision-makers is possible with the internet and other media. In terms of our country’s current instability, innovative strategies must be defined and put into action. VICO established a versatile community centre for the protection and empowerment of women and girls who are (have been) victims of war; a centre that we believe to be a protected environment. This centre is located some 10 km from a cyber café. Of the 100 women and girls that visit the centre, less than 3 know how to use a computer and the internet. The centre is lit by solar panels.

Global Objective:

We want women living in rural areas to be connected to other women and women networks around the world.

Specific Objectives:

1. Establish a service for training in computer science.
2. Provide rural women and girls with a cyber café in their village centre.

Results:

Women and girls who are connected and who communicate with other women as well as local, national and international media.

your leadership is so important

Dear Ntakebuka Wilhelmine,

You make a very important point that in today's world, lack of access to digital media cuts women off from the world, and reinforces their ignorance. Your leadership in allaying this situation through establishing a safe cyber center for rural women and girls is so important. Enabling the VICO center with internet technology and providing digital literacy training will open new worlds to the women and girls who come to the center. Through the World Pulse "Women Weave the Web" digital campaign, you are raising your voice to be heard by NGOs who are in a position to help you make this happen. Your leadership is so important! I wish you success in achieving your dream at VICO.

All the best,
Susa

Continuez votre excellent travail!

À bientôt,
Pilar

I do commend you on the work you are doing in your region and I am sure with your efforts and initiative more women will be benefitted. I do believe that violence against women has been a problem around the world and we definitely need to address this issue and what better way to do this but through awareness through internet.

Keep up the good work and best of luck.

Julie

Chères amies;

Wilhelmine.

The Wilhelmine

The Wilhelmine Ntakebuka,

What an amazing place you are a part of, to train rural women not only how to use technology, but how to change their lives. I believe that as women such as you continue pushing the boundaries of the possible, only good things will come of it.

I especially appreciate this : "The partnership between the media and women must be strengthened and developed in rural areas, this synergy advocacy at local, national, subregional, regional and international levels, in conjunction with ongoing outreach to other women in the world will have a strong impact on decision-makers, and this should have a positive effect, even beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo."

It WILL have a positive effect. That I believe with my whole heart.

Let us Hope together-
