Today I start to make a difference

I am a woman who has grown up in the United States with so many advantages. I read Half the Sky and this book led me to World Pulse. I feel a very strong burden in my heart to help and unify with other women in the world but I do not know where or how to begin. So, here goes:

It sounds shallow compared to the challenges other women face, but the greatest challenge in my community for logging in and participating online is most likely time, not resources. Many women in America born with resources have created worlds around them where they are "too busy" to do what they feel in their heart may be the most important thing they need to do.

The local library in Riverside is easy to use the internet, but especially at the downtown location, there are so shady characters seeking shelter in the library. Certainly may not feel safe after nightfall even in our safe town.

One resource I do know of is McDonalds (no, I don't own stock). I just know from experience that you can go into most McDonalds in the United States, and there is free internet. They say with purchase, but most locations I have noticed do not monitor that closely. This should apply at most McDonalds, but just in case, here is a webpage where you can put in an address and get the closest McDonalds with free wifi

http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/services/free_wifi.html

I think more cities should offer free wifi city wide. Many large cities are doing this. My city, Riverside has it downtown, but they need to expand it. Cities could do this at no cost, especially utilizing advertisers, and give access to the world for many people.

I want to be involved. I want to make a difference. I am especially interested in medical issues, advocacy.
Today I start.

Congratulations!

I also recently read Half the Sky and was very motivated by what I found in its pages! I look forward to reading about what sort of advocacy work you decide to do regarding medical issues. Brava!

Making a difference

You're doing a great deed just by sharing and getting involved in the community. Online or not, you're making a difference by making your voice heard and being a voice for those who do not because they have less access to the internet. Continue doing what you're doing, and even more when you find an opportunity to do so because you're making a difference. My best wishes for you

Lylin

Thank you for sharing!

Dear Drpkahn,

Thank you for sharing! I can relate to you what you're saying. Like you, I don't experience barriers to accessing the Internet, but I do find myself caught up in the "busy-ness" of my own creation where I don't seem to have time to do some of the things that matter most. In recognizing that though I've been able to pull myself out of constant motion, identify the things I want to make a priority, and then make time for them.

There are many ways to get involved in the global women's movement, and I would agree with Lylin above that sharing and getting involved in the World Pulse community is a great way to start. There are women here working on different projects with different needs and there are always opportunities to help out or even just offer support. I'm so glad you've joined us!

Looking forward to connecting with you again soon.

Best wishes,
Emily

Welcome Dear Drpkahn!

Hi Drpkahn ! What a beautiful person ! Your sensitivity and being in the corect frequency is what makes who you are in this moment. I think we all have our karma and it is great to hear who has a great dedication to service and is busy to help. I am currently in Buenos Aires and here there is also WiFi in places but there are women who still not very well know how to use internet or just use it to socialize entertainment nothing more . Being here makes you involved writing is a good circle to exchange ideas and create change . Welcome to our world WorldPulse
With love and gratitude
Caroline
