Introducing myself and my journal: Acceso Libre

About Me:
Hi! I'm Marianne Diaz, a lawyer, writer and activist with a strong focus on the issues of online freedom of speech, net neutrality and access to culture and information. As a lawyer, I have a background on gender issues and I have been always deeply concerned with the equality of opportunities for women; I even wanted to devote my career to the issue but alas, one only gets a life to live. However, my work as an advocate for digital rights, free and open culture has led me to be concerned with the specific issue of women in technology. I myself am not a programmer, but I'm trying to learn how to code, and it strikes me as offensive and worrying that even while we might be passionated and deeply involved with something as abstract as programming, we are often seen as intruders or phoney only because we are not men. I'd like, from my field of work, help changing that.
I'm currently working with my NGO, AccesoLibre, on building an open online academy for teaching tools and tips on digital security, aimed primarily to activists and lawyers in my country -Venezuela- which is going through difficult times on the matter of freedom of speech, and also for everyone who has access to the Web, so they can help to protect themselves while online: I think this will be a tool for empowerment and freedom, and I am very excited about this project.

My Passions:
literature, culture, technology, freedom, learning new things

My Challenges:
building our open online academy and getting it ready to work!

My Vision for the Future:
open, free and multicultural

My Areas of Expertise:
law, copyright, freedom of speech, editing and publishing

Women Weave the Web Campaign

Marianne,

I was so fascinated to read about Acceso Libre! What a beautiful project. I wonder if you would be willing to compose a piece about digital issues for our Women Weave the Web Campaign? I'd love to hear your thoughts about how technology affects your life and the lives of women around you. And your ICT work would be a perfect subject! You can find out more information about the campaign here, http://worldpulse.com/campaigns/www/how-to-participate It would be fabulous to have your voice join others as we think through issues around digital access in all its complexity.

By participating, you will be joining a global community of women speaking out on the importance of digital inclusion and empowerment for women. Your voice will be delivered to powerful decision makers such as government officials, leaders in the technology industry, and policy makers at international organizations. In addition to influencing global agendas, your submission to the campaign will open the door to incredible opportunities such as:

· Being selected to represent World Pulse at influential international forums. This is your chance to meet key players and make your voice count!

· Connecting and building relationships with grassroots women leaders around the world. Be part of a community of thousands of women speaking out on this issue!

· Exploring and sharing resources for your work on our Campaign Resources page. Find support for your initiatives from funding to volunteers and supporters!

· Getting your voice heard on a global scale! World Pulse will analyze and collate your stories to deliver recommendations to influencers and decision makers on a global scale.

· Getting visibility and support for your work. Your story could be featured on our site, included in an e-magazine, or even published by well-known media outlets!

And the 2014 Lynn Syms Prize will be awarded to an outstanding grassroots woman and visionary voice using digital tools to effect change and advance her community work. The prize will include a $20,000 monetary prize to be paid out over two years to support her community based work, a feature profile on WorldPulse.com, and an all-expense paid trip to speak her message in New York City. You can find more on the website, http://worldpulse.com/campaigns/www/www-women-weave-the-web-campaign-prizes

The deadline is March 31st!

Si preferirias que te comunicara en castellano, si puedo! (aunque sin acentos y tildes...)

Wishing you peace,

Kelly
