Overview of the AEPIFHA Association for Women Living With a Disability in the Congo

Overview

My name is Mama Fariala Manganza and I am coordinator for the AEPIFHA Association. Regardless of where they occur, conflicts and wars are a source of devastation for the community at large. Women living with a disability are not exempt from these problems, bearing the weight and suffering physical and emotional burdens made worse by the attitudes and behaviour of their community. We have come to notice a sort of non-existence.

Founded in 2001, AEPIFHA (Association d’encadrement pour la promotion intégrale des femmes vivant handicap) provides handicapped women facing all types of difficulties with the necessary tools, strategies and resources to help them reconstruct their lives and achieve socio-professional integration. In the DRC, AEPIFHA has operated in South Kivu since 2001. It helps women who are socially excluded and who have to support themselves and all of the household burdens due to the conflicts and problems that arise in their country, but also to the gradual deterioration of the economic conditions and lack of assistance for women living with a disability due to their appearance.

Strategic Approach

The AEPIFHA’s strategy is to promote development through awareness of rights. By supporting women living with a disability, we can reconstruct their lives by encouraging profitable activities and socio-professional integration.

1. Training in Awareness of Women’s Rights and Leadership

We offer women a framework to discuss their socioeconomic and political rights where they can build on their personal capacities by showing them the value of a woman living with a disability. Women can regroup to discuss education, entrepreneurial development, health (HIV), the right to vote, domestic violence and other related themes. Through this approach, handicapped women can realize their true worth and potential and become aware of their role in the reconstruction of their community.

2. Training in Professional Trades

Here, we look at activities that are both profitable and conducive to their socio-professional integration. Women are trained in: working with coconut palm wood, tailoring and sewing, crafts, soap- making, and handbag weaving. The goal of this training is to reinforce handicapped women in their abilities but also to make them specialists in new fields so that they can take part in organizing their own production unit and find a stable job.

Bravo AEPIFHA

Pilar
