The Value of Internet Technology in the Rural Areas of Walungu and Kabare

From the Mama Neema’s “Mama Shujaa center” in Bukavu, we have trained only 4 women and three girls to use the internet, while Osodi in the Congo has more than 600 women apart in addition to other associations in the rural areas . The problem for rural areas is the lack of a center close to them. It is a challenge for women living in rural areas; they need a center in order to have support and in order to share their information with other women around the world. Of 100% of women in rural areas, 1% are not able to use a computer. Additionally, without this technology, the walungu and kabare are going to be very behind. It is necessary that women in the DRC and in South Kivu continue to help to promote technology and communication for women.

Technology and innovations in the media and communications have proven to be essential tools in reinforcing women’s rights. This new multimedia technology is unknown to the majority of women in the DRC/South Kivu but holds great potential to help locate pertinent and useful information to help make decisions and to promote social change for women’s rights. The association for the development of “Osodi” has thanked it’s partner “Mama Shujaa” in the DRC who organizes training sessions and who, since 2012, has recognized the importance of sharing and spreading pertinent information for Congolese women.

Computers are essential in the lives of Osodi women in order to promote peace in the DRC and in order to train women to become leaders so they can defend each other and become professionally competent like men. Women need a location where they can hold training sessions, share expertise in the professional domain, discuss the treatment of women and women’s rights in an international forum via the internet, and encourage other women to become trained and informed as well. Thanks to the information accessible via the internet on World Pulse thanks to Maman Sujaa in the DRC, the Osodi women are learning to correspond, to help and support and encourage each other in order to fight for women’s rights.

Oui!
Congratulations on the success of the "sessions de formation". These are clearly needed, especially in under-served rural communities and I applaud what you and your organization are doing to train people to help fill in this gap in access to the Internet.
The photo of the women holding up a poster about "securite" and "la paix" is great.

Please continue in your important work. You are helping to transform lives in your country and I wish you continued success.

Merci!

Thank you

Dear BALAGIZI MUHEBULE EMMANUEL,

I am so very grateful to you for writing your post. I translated your post into English, and there were parts that I did not understand, which led me to use the internet to find Bukavu, Kabare and Walangu on a map, and to also look for the Maman Shujaa Media Center to get a better understanding of the work that happens there. My search also took me to the Nobel Women’s initiative Facebook page, and it looks like a delegation has just visited your country. (Having arrived Feb. 22). I hope wonderful progress was made during those visits. In particular, I hope women from the Nobel Initiative offered solutions to the problem of not enough women in the Congo having access to the internet. Please write again to let us know what, if any, new initiatives are being launched to bring the internet (and all of its power) to women in rural communities, in addition to the work that is already being done at the Maman Shujaa Media Center.

Thank you, again, for teaching me more about the Democratic Republic of Congo. And please forgive me if I have misunderstood parts of your journal entry.

Your friend in America,
Kit

Hopeful Future

Balagizi,

I am happy to see your efforts to get technology and training to the women in these communities, and that you understand how it can help them to advance by learning new technology. I see the problem is getting the technology and facilities there in the first place so they can learn. How have you gotten the computers that you do use already? Is there a chance to get more in the near future? Are you supported by the government or is this funded by the people in the community?

I love seeing the photos you have included!

Thank You

Like the other commenter, Kit, said, I am so grateful for this opportunity to not only learn about the important issues surrounding internet knowledge and accessibility for women, especially in rural areas, but so much more. I am inspired by the people and organizations working hard and making a difference, like yourself. I am also gaining an expanded understanding of different parts of the world I have never been to. Thank you for sharing this information.

All my best,

Keep Talking

Thank you so much for your post and your story. Please don't ever stop sharing what you have been working on/what you are continuing to fight for in the DRC. So many people try to educate themselves through media and scholars who have done "extended research," etc. But what always impacts and educates more than any of that are the narratives of lived experience. I am eager to pass on your efforts in your own words to my friends who have been learning about the DRC, to give them a name and an experience that doesn't just glorify efforts but asks for more understanding and progress to be made. What you are doing and trying to accomplish already has, and will continue to change your community.

Cheers to peace building, please keep updating us on what is going on near you!!
Thank you for sharing,
Valorie
