North Kivu: 70% of girls have adolescent sexual relations, according to UNICEF

These figures give you the shivers: More than 70% of girls in North Kivu, ages 15-24, have already had sexual relations, and only 8% with contraception. These figures from 2010 were communicated to the press by UNICEF this past Wednesday, at the end of a meeting of the education cluster of all of the NGOs working in the HIV/AIDS sector.

(Translated quote) 'In the province of North Kivu, more than 70% of young girls, whose ages vary from 15 to 24 years, have had early sexual relations, according to the 2010 survey.'

These figures were given to us by Dr. Idumbo Marthe, AIDS officer for UNICEF's Eastern Zone / HIV/AIDS section during an interview that she granted us. According to her, this early sexual behavior ranges between 15 and 14 years of age. She also added that youth should involve themselves in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the educational setting.

What a horrifying statistic.

What a horrifying statistic. Can you share link to the UNICEF study you mention? I would be interested in reading it.

Thank you!

Bonjour! Pour moi la question

Bonjour!
