Letter to the Women of the Democratic Republic of Congo

Tags:

Dear sisters,
Not too long ago, I joined this amazing initiative called World Pulse. At that time, I had no idea that I would come into contact with so many strong and fearless women. As a translator, I was prepared to lend a helping hand in any way possible, but I never imagined how much this experience would open my eyes to the realities of the world. But the best part, by far, has been learning from women like you.

Sometimes I feel as if I lived in a bubble. In my comfortable life, I often forget that for many around the world, life is a fight to survive. It’s easy to get caught up in the little things, and to forget that life has so much good to offer, if we just open our eyes. This is why I want to thank you, women of the Democratic Republic of Congo, for reminding me that life is beautiful, despite the struggles that we may have to face.

I know I will never be as strong, as brave and as hopeful as you all, but after having read your stories and helped share them with the world, I have a new understanding of life. I may never experience first-hand the hardships that you suffer, but believe me that I will do everything in my power to help you put an end to it. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being the most incredible role models for me.

I hope to help you as much as you have helped me.

All my love,
Pilar

Thank you, Pilar

Dear Pilar,

Thank you so much for volunteering as a translator so that our sisters from the Democratic Republic of Congo can get their stories out into the world. You provide such a powerful service, helping to give the voiceless a voice!! My sister is a french teacher at a college here in Oregon and just this week we talked about her telling her students about World Pulse and the possibility of them doing translation work. She is excited to talk to them about this volunteer opportunity, as she knows that her students thirst for utilizing their french-language skills via work that is meaningful and has a real impact in the world.

I too am immensely humbled by the bravery and resilience of our women friends in the DRC, and I thank you for expressing your feelings in your letter so beautifully. I join you in my commitment to doing what I can to helping end the violence and suffering that our Congolese sisters face. We're all in this together and together we can make a real difference.

Peace,

Susan

Thank you

Susan,
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. It means a lot to me to be part of World Pulse, and to connect daily with women who have such a strong will for change. I think it's a wonderful idea to get as many people involved as possible, and I don't doubt that many students would love to be part of this movement. It's great academic and life experience. Thank you again for your kind words!

Courage Comes in Many Forms

Dear Pilar,
I was incredibly touched by your letter. One of the things I love most about it is the genuine sense of gratitude you shared, about your own life and how we learn so much from others -- and are better for that openness, that learning.

You stimulated reflection for me about courage ("strong, brave, and hopeful") and how it manifests in different ways. Being "comfortable" and having the courage to stop, volunteer, reflect, learn and share sincere gratitude may not feel like the same kind of courage it takes to face the hardships our Congolese sisters do, but make no mistake -- you are a role model of courage too.

Thank you for what you do as a translator and for what you did for me with this letter: reminded me that courage comes in many forms.

Best regards,
Jone

I know that in the end, we are all here to make a difference. I'm glad I've helped you reflect and I want to thank you, as well, for reminding me that we all show courage, each in our own way.

Thank you again!

All the best,
Pilar

Thank you for your beautifully written letter to the women of the DRC. It is so important for us to remember and be conscious of our privileges in life, how ever small, because so many of our sisters around the world suffer daily from varying forms of gender based violence.

Your compassion and love speaks volumes!
